    Sony's Blu-Ray player was delayed I believe, but there is a 3rd party Blu-Ray player available (I think ...).

I watched the BBC thing about Blu ray this morning on the news. A BBC technology feature that didn't make me cringe. I've still not recovered from hearing that visitors to E3 were blown away by the Nintendo 360 (true story).

Its here in the US, but I doubt its worth it. From what I've been hearing the first batch of movies are encoded in MPEG2, which looks awful compared to H.264 (what they are supposed to be using). Hopefully sony will sort out the issues and use the proper codec as with the space advantage over HD-DVD they do have the ability to look better.

Right now though HD-DVD is the winner in quality.

it is a bunch of bullshit blueray... hd dvd crap no one cares anymore. But i will end up supporting hd dvd because the players don't need to be hooked up to a broad band line to authenticate my movies. Sony is slipping so bad... Can't wait to see there next new thing holographic STREUDEL.

Since i work at Wally World, I got to see the HD-DVD display (till they took it down due to it "not being correctly set up"), and they used Superman as the demo movie. I wasn't too impressed with the vid quality, tho as I was told it was running in 1080i instead of 1080p since the store I work at doesn't have a 1080p TV in yet (cheap bastards).

Ultimately, this "explains" the whole lot (and I agree with a lot of it, especially the PS3 comments  ): http://www.audioholics.com/news/editorials/10reasonsHDDVDsfailed.php

Seems like Blu-Ray is getting pushed while HD-DVD is getting shunned by retailers. Im hearing a lot of reports that the HD-DVD players are being taken down and Blu-Ray is getting pushed on people. Seems like the profit from Blu-Ray is a lot more than HD-DVD..

well over at http://thedigitalbits.com , which reviews dvds, they have impressions on both formats. From what they say the blu ray model by samsung seems to have a bit of issues, especially with 1080i hooked through hdmi, but this problem seems to only be occuring with panasonic hd screens after testing out on a pioneer plasma.

It came. It went. No one cared. ;)

The general public in the US couldn't give two shits about HD-DVD or Blu-ray right now.

At $500, a HD-DVD player is seen as an expensive toy.
At $1000, a Blu-ray player is seen as something for one with too much cash.

I see in the US that most peoples' first Blu-ray player is going to be the PS3, as was the PS2 for their first DVD players.

I still see it as too expensive and too early into the market...

honestly the US market isnt really ready for it, and with hardly anyone talking about it it shows. People here feel dvd is fine enough. Most consumers wont even consider either format till hd tv go waaay down in price. Even then hd dvd has a better chance due to name and playing them on normal dvds as well.

Seen, that our local Wal Mart had about 30 or so different HD-DVD movies, but no systems themselves, I was surprised however, that the prices weren't a huge increase from normal DVD's

No need to get bent out of shape about the price. If had the money to burn and was a videophile id buy one. You guys know how this works, its all exspensive when it first comes out.

I think HDDVD will end up on top, sony has forced its formats on retailers beofre and it hasnt gotten them anywhere. The PS3 is the only hope for sony, if it wasnt for that it would already be over.
