It's been several years since i got my Commodore 64, but i never got it to boot properly. All it shows is a blue screen and border but no text. I looked on the internet for info and i found that the problem might be the BASIC rom... the problem is, i don't know where to find new chips or another broken c64 and have no skills in soldering and desoldering.

Ray Carlsen is like God of C64 repair. Here is his tutorial on C64 repair: http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/cbm/c64/c64-ic.txt

Lists of symptoms and what to check. And hope your C64 are all socketed. Commodore was strangely inconsistent with socketing. Some C64 has socketed ROM, some has only 1 or 2 ROMs socketed and not other, some some don't have any socketed ROM. I've seen C64 with 2 CIA socketed, 1 CIA socketed, and neither. VIC is almost always socketed.

Good luck with the repair, and do be careful if you need to desolder. It's a bitch to safely remove the chip from C64 board, the traces can lift easily.
