OTHER Borti4938's N64 advanced kit - 2 left

For those unaware, @borti4938 designed an amazing project to add RGB and YPbPr (component) video outputs to the N64. It is an FPGA project and includes an on-screen menu display menu to control various line doubling and even deinterlacing of 480i options. It's a flexible solution and a major step up from composite video on the multi-av and less than 1/3rd the price of the ultrahdmi. Now this is set up as a completely DIY project, so the components and PCB's need to be sourced. The FPGA requires some (cheap) hardware to program. Additionally, some of the chips require something finer than a soldering iron from the hardware shop. This combined seems to make the entry barrier for going for this mod a little high. I think this is a shame because the project is just really awesome.

Since I did the project myself I have a few boards left over that I think may lower the entry barrier for others if it means they don't need to have (multiple) boards fabricated themselves.

This is what I'm offering:
* Bare PCBs for €10
* Assembled and flashed PCBs for €60.

Full disclosure: I paid $114 for 10 boards + stencil which included shipping, so I'm not to make any gains there.
The components are about €40 ordered from Digikey so you'd pay me about €10 for assembling them. There's 8 ic's and including small stuff about 80 components on the board (bottom side has many SMD resistors/caps too). It's a bit under 2 hours to neatly assemble the board.

Reference picture included, top half soldered using stencil in oven. Bottom components hand-soldered.
Once my 9 remaining boards are gone I probably won't do another batch.

Shipping is not included, but small boards can be shipped cheaply by envelope.
If there's interest in populated boards, I will process orders in multiples of at least 2 because I'd order the components as needed and need larger orders to qualify for free shipping from Digikey. Also there's some setup time involved so it's much more efficient to process that way.

 

Thanks for supplying these as I just bought Tim's board from Australia yesterday. Is there any advantage over his? What's the deal with that tantalum capacitor lol

 

Advantages are the YPbPr output and OSD menu.
That tantalum cap is used where alternatively 2 ceramics would go but since they weren't stocked I had to go with what I had lying around. Though I've replaced it already as I did find some 22 and 33uF caps the other day.

 

I see, well charging $10 for assembly is pretty cheap and I would have bought yours if you posted yesterday unfortunately. Good luck with the sales!

Quick update for the buyers: this evening I've assembled the boards. I will test them tomorrow and ship them on Thursday.

How difficult is the solder work of this board onto the n64 board?

 

Depends on the NUS chip in your console. There's a version with 1.27mm pitch and one with 0.65mm and you have to attach some wires to this without causing solder bridges. It's not very hard but a beginner might mess up. There's also the possibility to buy a breakout flatcable from Tim (original N64RGB board creator) for the small pitch one which makes installation a little easier.

 

This is pretty amazing, I just wish there was a visual guide, not worried about the soldering as much as working out where to solder without a beginner guide

Is there anyone planning on selling borti's flex board ?

 

I'm intending to sell a lot of his devices, I will be getting things produced soon.

 

Weird, viewing that link corrupts something in google chrome and the video driver (nouveau on Debian Linux). It causes display corruption on all chrome tabs. I had to completely close and reopen chrome it to fix the issue. I was able to save the file to disk and open it in a standalone pdf viewer without issue.

 

Small bump, there's 3 pcb's remaining. Any takers?
