For the first time in ages, yesterday I decided to buy the local newspaper. What a waste of 50 cents. People still read the paper? I guess after all these years of www.cnn.com and www.reuters.com with fast real-time news updates, going back to the printed versions seems so...archaic. Loads of boring articles. Out of date info. And a mess to dispose of when you're done reading it. Guess I just prefer the convenience and speed of getting my news online.
I disagree - I'd take a good newspaper over pretty much any news source any day. It contains a lot more in-depth information, opinions from people who actually know what they're writing about, interesting non-headline news, etcetera. Plus, I'd rather read from paper than from a screen, and it saddens me that the Internet seems to be gaining ground on pretty much everything and, often, replacing it with things over lower quality. Hence, I have no internet connection in my dorm room and I actually feel good about it.
I don't read the newspaper too often unless there is something that catches my eye. I never watch the news, due to it mainly being about who was murdered or raped within the past week (not something I want to hear about daily).
I read the newspaper every day, and I generally get fits of rage from the news (Mexican politics are so absolutely rage-inducing). I still, every day, read the paper. Publico is the "least bad" of the newspapers in Guadalajara, but Mexico City gets "La Jornada", which is the left wing newspaper. Then again, my brother and my father are journalists (I've made articles too, from time to time) so we're always surrounded by the news. In our house, there's always the paper, the radio, and TV with the news, continuously. I also became addicted to CNN thanks to a thesis-like assignment at the end of college that required me to monitor almost 8 hours of it a day. My TV still is located right next to my computer monitor, and it's generally tuned to CNN. I've taken the habit of watching Law and Order, too. Three episodes a day on TNT. My brain hurts. I thank the spirits I wasn't made to watch TV Azteca OR Fox News. I'd probably already had a stroke or some sort of Aneurysm.
And that's essentially what the bulk of my newspaper consisted of...2/3 of it consisted of dull editorials, classifieds, and local stories mainly about crime, property taxes, and so forth. I guess if you're one of those nosy neighbors who likes to keep up on the local gossip and happenings, this is the sort of stuff that keeps you going.
I agree, I read two to three quality newspapers each day (with sometimes a French paper such as Libération, and a Dutch paper like the NRC handelsblad). Newspapers read much easier, are portable and well written. They give a much better view on things (especially when reading different papers/opinions). I have two subscriptions that I use occasionally to read the paper on the internet though.
Over here our newspapers are full of scantily clad young ladies ...Sorry what was the question again?
hehe I normally visit http://www.ananova.com or http://news.bbc.co.uk for my news fix. Back when I was in High School though I used to read the Daily Sport (for obvious teenage male reasons ) The Sun and The Daily Star had 1 topless girl on page 3 per paper, the Daily Sport has a topless girl on almost every page hehe.
lol, tabloids are complete shite outside of the pr0n, though We get our local paper (the Limerick Post) for free, but it's pretty naff, and depressing. They try to be diverse by having stuff other than local news, but fail miserably - in their Motoring section last week, a caption under a picture of some car claimed that Ford were part of General Motors... erm, sure...
