Went to a computer meeting today and bought a ASUS A7S8X-MX mainbord with AMD sempron 2200+ thoroughbred processor for 85euro's..

did i have a good buy ??? i'm posting this with the new machine, so it works fine...

It only gives one error at bootup saying something about eeprom failure.. but it works fine and fast

You can't complain at that price. The EEPROM failure is a little worrying, though, I'd do a bit of research (google) on that if I were you.

The EEPROM error is most certainly something to do with the BIOS. Try changing the jumper to reset the BIOS and see if it works after that. Maybe the battery's gone? If those two don't work, try flashing the BIOS (it should be available from the ASUS website), though I'm sure if that would be a good idea in this situation.

Worst case scenario could be that someone gave you a motherboard with a fuckered BIOS. Do you have a warranty, or was this second-hand?

Plug in the speaker to the mainboard connectors and see if it's giving you any post beeps (like "beeeep beep beep", which generally means "loose video card". Try clearing the CMOS (there should be a jumper on the mobo, check your manual), then try reseating your memory and your graphics card (take them out and put them back in again).

I cleared the cmos data, nothing then, gives one beep that always beeps.

i found the problem why the screen (edit : or the whole pc) didn't work, my brother told me he had the same problem with old wires... then I checked the fan I screwed onto my geforce (it's an old P75 fan :p) it had a loose cable... i screwed it back off trew it away and works perfectly ..

except the eeprom thing at startup.

I'm going to check that when I'm in a better mood, else i'm sure i'll get nowhere fixing it..
Took me 4 hours to install hardware & software yesterday so..

What's the exact message it gives? Write it down word-for-word and post it up here.

Oh, that's totally different to what I was thinking. Maybe the on-board LAN has no MAC address, or a wrong one. Is there any way of disabling the MAC address in the BIOS? I don't think you really need one if you're just using it at home, though I'm not exactly sure what MAC addresses do and how they're set. All I know is that they're some big hex number that NICs have, and for example, if someone wants their PC to work on the network in my college they need to get their MAC address registered with the IT Department.

I have no clue what a mac adress is! I think some kind of code in de hardware that's unique worldwide?.. in order to identify it.. don't know.

Yeah, each network card has its own unique MAC address. Disabling the on-board LAN and using a PCI network card would be the easiest solution to this probably.

If it can't be fixed, yeah. A cheap-ass NIC is about 10 Euro, and a good one (unless you wany gigabit ethernet for some reason) will set you back a whopping *20* Euro! I don't think it's worth returning the motherboard or getting it repaired if it is broken - it won't be worth the hassle.

Are there any settings for the NIC in the BIOS menu, outside of enabling/disabling it?

allready put in a topcom 10/100 fast ethernet card.. works fine!
Good thing I have these cards laying around

If that motherboard ends up failing on you completely I have a chaintech 7NJL3 socket A motherboard that is not being used. It works wonderfully. The only reason I dont use it anymore is because I wanted a mobo that can overclock well and this one cant but its good at everything else!! Anyway just keep this in mind just in case it does fail on you.

ok, it's noted... i've had a chaintech before this.. with the raid option.. Was pretty good but I really got the feeling ASUS mobo's are pretty fast and good in comparison to other brands!

If it was new, take it back.

There IS a fault. You can show them that. Tell them you want your on-board LAN working.

If you have a faulty product, it is always best to have it swapped right away - it may only cause more problems later.

Incidentally - you took the fan of the graphics card? Did it have one originally? If so, I would advise getting another if possible - they can burn out quite easily.

That error did sound a bit dodgy. It could be just the EEPROM is b0rked and nothing else, but as retro said it's possible it could be something a lot more serious. It's kinda hard to make decisions like this - whether to take it back or not, when it might not be serious.

I got an Asus CD burner a couple of years ago, for example, and the read light on the front never worked. The prospect of sending it back to Norway (I got it from Komplett, who are teh pwn ^_^), and *then* back to Taiwan or wherever, seemed like too much hassle. So I just hoped to God it was just a faulty or incorrectly connected LED and nothing else. 2 years later and it's still working great! And I'm probably saving about 5 cent a year on electricity bills :smt042

It's from a vendor miles from where I live!! except for the error it gave it works nice

I put the fan on the standard heat sink.. it's the geforce withouth a fan (mx 420).. Kept is cooler than it standard is so must be better no???

But I have no advantage with the fan on it because i didn''t overclock the video card yet.. so the fan had no function anyway.
