I was at a flea market and picked up a strange game boy cartridge unit called the brainboy. It allows one to add mew to pokemon silver and gold, plus hack every pokemon. What's more interesting is it allows one to run game boy games at 2x speed on a game boy color. It also allows custom colorizing of the games, and backing up saves from carts. It's made by pelikan, and has a really warezy label. Add pictures in a bit.
Looks like this right? From what I've heard, its pretty much just a glorified cheat cart for Pokemon. Much like some of the N64 memory carts pre-loaded with particular save game hacks etc for a particular game. If your going to cheat, you might as well get a real cheat cart since you can enter new codes and such, but it is a nice little oddity.
It might just be temporarily over clocking the game boy color. ive seen it happen ChickHEN for psp embeds itself into the ram and is only activated when user activated and turns off when the psp unit is turned off. ChickHEN is like flashing a psp only not perminately
AFAIK it's not hardware, it just hacks the game to run in GBC mode -> instant 2x speed. IIRC the hacked GB X-Changer Menu (gbphack) and the menu that comes with DGBMax could also set 2x speed individually to GB games. I heard games like Chessmaster profited tremendously from that hack.
