Im not sure if Sega started it, but from what I recall they and SNK were the only ones that had this type of advertising where they would compare their console to the rest and sometimes bash them.

    Example:
Sega Saturn commercials of throwing up the n64 in the air and shooting it to pieces.

A guy beating his head with a dead squirrel to see colors on his gameboy. Game gear ad..

Some dude dropping a PSX off a building saying "fly plaything...fly...."

    Sega Genesis vs NintenDONT

SNK ad of calling the other consoles weenies and neo-geo the real hot dog

Oh hell yes. They really need to bring back the cool Sega Intros like they did in the Mega Drive Days.

That nintendont ad was totally lame. Just goes to show what American ads are like!

Over here, you're not allowed to slag off another product. Hence all the "we tested fairy liquid against brand x liquid" type ads. It is much better when it doesn't get personal.

Advertise your strong points and let them stand for themselves. That's way better than saying hey, we're a stuffed hot dog, and THESE companies have no filling. Umm, wtf? I don't want a f$!kin' hotdog, I want a games console!!! The rest of the ad quotes specs, and shows NO game screenshots, or even lists and titles available!

What is better out of these....

Buy a Ferrari - 20x Le Mans winner, 200x F1 Grand Prix winner!

    or....

Buy a Ferrari, it has twice the torque of a Porsche, 200BHP more than a Ford, does 0-60 3.6 seconds faster than a Lotus.......

    Oh sorry, I nodded off!

I actually remember one of those Sega commercials, with that guy screaming, "Sega!"

I always hated that SNK ad because of the errors and misinformation in it:
    1) The "SEGA" has 80 simultaneous sprites; and "NEC", 64.
    2) The "Nintendo" also has 64 simultaneous sprites, so its bar should be the same scale as the NEC system.
    3) NEC's base system has 6 sound channels, not 10. SEGA's has 8, right?
    4) The Nintendo has 5 sound channels, so its bar should be in proportion to the rest of them, not a tiny stub like in the chart.
    5) Penis jokes are the lamest form of humour.

Actually, the Genesis has 9 channels. 6 FM channels (or 5 FM and 1 DAC channel), and 3 PSG channels.

    Rember the 32X ads?

The system may have blown, but one of the more memorable promos was a woman moaning faster, FASTER, then it cut away to a 32X being move up and down on top of a genisis

I'm not a fan of US TV adds really. Now the British early Sega Mega Drive adds were real class ! Never has there been adds as good as them. Same cast in each one too. It was like a mini series.

Does prime rib cost more than squirrel burgers.

That line cracked me up in the day, and still does. In fact I use it more often than the old favourite 'do bears shit in the woods'.

Agree with Yakumo though..the sega ads were like the alternative Linda Bellingham Oxo family for gamers:)

Does anyone remember the Japanese commercial for the Neo Geo cd where at the end a husband and wife are playing against each other? The wife is in a robe and hairtowel and to distract her husband she lifts up her leg (showing some skin) and while he looks over she goes real fast and wins. That was great. But yeah, we need more competetive system bashing. Back in the day I thought Sega was being immature but now it's just classic.

  15. Congratulations on your new lower standards!!

What are you talking about? What about the famous Amiga billboard that said, "To be this good will take Sega ages"?

Anyway, that old Sega advertising was just horrible. I can't imagine why anyone would want it brought back. You guys must watch too many reality shows and MTV or something.

SNKs ads form that period were even worse because they were so transparent. The only kind of people that stuff attracted were Firebird-driving mullet-wearing freaks like Dion Dakis.

Okay well I think it's mainly nostalgia that make the old commercials funny. I wouldn't actually want that type of advertising back because I think the best advertising is gameplay, which the most commercials these days actually concentrate on. But that doesn't change the fact that I can look back at old commercials and have a laugh.

I can't remember any old video game ads for some reason. I remember a while back one of my friends asking if I remembered the ads for some Saturn games, and I was like "There were Saturn games!?". I vaguely remember a NES ad, then nothing for about 6 years, then I vaguely remember N64 and PS1 ads...

I'm intrigued. Da ya know if it would still be possible to find and download the series?
