Got 3 Game Boy originals today for £2. One works fine. One does not power on at all- contacts are all corroded but even when cleaned and the crap scraped off, does not boot. Looks fine inside. The third- well, its all brown. It powers on but the NINTENDO logo is always scrambled. Open it up, and it is a horror inside. All green and corroded and gunky and totally rank, surpruised it even powers on. I've cleaned on and around the contacts and it still doesnt boot into a game. Any advice?

There are Game Boys that don't boot?

These things have survived Fires and Nuclear fallout

    My thoughts exactly!

Well got one to work; swapped the contacts from the proper manky one that doesn't boot into a game into the one that doesnt work at all (its cleaner). So two reasonable Game Boys for £2! I think the third is a lost cause! I should have got some pictures of the inside. It stank of rank corroded metal!

If the legs are green then it is a good chance that the chips are fucked as we say in the trade. Give up on it and find an alternative use for it.

Gut it and put a GBA in the case.

For the ones that give a garbled Nintendo Logo, I suspect its the cart contacts. You mentioned all the corrosion inside, unusual unless left outside overnight exposed to moisture. A very thorough cleaning and maybe rebending the cart contacts might work.

Yeah my thought was obvious water damage, perhaps since it boots, the contacts can be rectified and it can be salvaged! The case is fuckered, fit for the bin. Its on ebay, if it doesnt sell (it won't..) I'll sell the parts. Ill get some photos to show you how rank it is..
