Hi! One of my SNESs was a bit broken when trying it out today. This is a video that i recorded of it: This is what happens when I put Zelda: A Link To The Past into it (the game works in the other SNES). Tried Spider-Man / X-Men in this same console and it worked. As you can see it's got no sound during the rotating triangles and it hangs with a strange "ping" in the end. I've tried pushing some controller buttons after the hanging to see if the game appears to be alive without graphics, but can get no response either in graphics or in sound. I have tried cleaning the cartridge with some alcohol, but I can't get any wool into the connector on the console. I'm an electronics engineer so don't be afraid to get technical, but I have no knowledge whatsoever about the internals of the SNES.
Pretty sure that's just a busted/dirty connector. Open up your SNES and swap the cartridge connector with your other SNES, and if it works, then that's your problem. You can open it up by either melting the end of a Bic pen and jamming it into one of the screw holes to make your own bit, or you can just buy one of the many many bits available, like this one for example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverhill-...=UTF8&qid=1445175519&sr=8-1&keywords=snes+bit.
Thank you for the quick response! I actually have the Nintendo bits somewhere, but that Bic pen was a smart idea. I'll open them up and try switching!
I tried swapping the connector yesterday, but unfortunately it didn't work. No difference at all. Any other guesses?
Hmmm, well then I have no idea... If you do eventually figure out the problem, I could source you some cheap parts from a Super Famicom.
Is the CPU a S-CPU or S-CPU-A? If so, check out this thread. The CPU may be dead or dying. The dying CPU issue has similar symptoms. The problem only seems to be with the older SNES consoles with a separate sound module. It's possible it is some other chip too. If the CPU turns out to be the issue, take up Chief's offer and see if he can get you a S-CPU B. These seem to be the ones that aren't dying (yet).
