[I don't know if it's allowed for people to post about PC game mods in these forums, so if it isn't, then please delete this post, but otherwise please let this post stand, as this mod is *amazing*] For any fans of the ancient (but still great) PC game Doom, have you tried Brutal Doom (http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom)? Unlike most Doom mods it's neither a set of new levels, not a new Doom engine, instead it alters the gameplay, not enough to lose the Doom 'feel', but enough to make it feel like a modernised (in a good way) version of Doom. The weapons have been altered, some of the enemy AI, movement, and attacks have been altered, you can now aim vertically, headshots now do more damage than body shots, some non-human enemies drop weapons when they die, which you can pick up and use, you can reload weapons, you gain health from killing powerful enemies, and lots more nice touches. Be warned though, there's tonnes of blood. Alright, so there's little here that hasn't been done in other Doom mods, but what this mod does, it does *very* well indeed. It really does make vanilla Doom feel pedestrian, which isn't much short of amazing. Basically, if you like Doom, then you have to try this mod. Plus it works with addon-on levels (both Doom 1 and 2). Graphics aside (at the moment this mod won't work with 3D model enabled Doom engines) this is, to me, what Doom 3 should have been. To see it in action, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzsG2sLc7dk If you want to try it, then follow these instructions; 1. Make sure you have at least one Doom .wad file (comes with Doom 1, Doom 2, or Ultimate Doom). 2. Download Brutal Doom from http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom (I use BDoomZD_BrutalCompatible_v8.7z) 3. Download GZDoom from http://www.osnanet.de/c.oelckers/gzdoom/download.html (I use gzdoom-bin-1-8-02.zip) 4. Download ZDL (Doom Launcher) from http://zdoom.org/wiki/ZDL (I use ZDL-3.2.2.2-stable.zip) 5. Create a folder on your hard drive (say c:\games\doom) and unzip the three files from steps 2 to 4 into this hard folder). Then copy doom.wad or doom2.wad to this folder. 6. You start ZDL.exe to play Brutal Doom, so you might want to create a shortcut to ZDL.exe on your desktop. Anyway, double click to load ZDL.exe 7. In ZDL, click on settings, then click on 'Add' under the IWAD box to add your Doom .wad from the folder you created in step 5 8. Click on 'Add' under the 'Source ports/engines' box, and select gzdoom.exe 9. Click on 'Main', and click on 'Add' under the "External files" box, and select brutalv018a.pk3 That's it. Just click Launch to play the game, and of course since ZDL saves it's settings then whenever you load it up you just have to click Launch to play.
I dont see why talking about PC gaming would not be allowed, Ive read and watched about this mod before. Looks totally Badass. And we seem to agree on one thing, DooM 3 was not what it should have been.
It's just that to me this site seems to be more console orientated, with little PC-based discussion, so I'm not sure if PC only discussions are encouraged. And yes, I'm no fan of Doom 3. I'm not saying it's a bad game, just that it's not 'Doomish', and it doesn't appeal to me. Doom should be fast moving, with none of that having to listen to audio logs to find the pass-codes for ammo lockers, the darkness was over-done (it worked in Doom 1 and 2 as it was only occasional, but in D3 it's everywhere, so it doesn't stand out as unnerving), I hated the way half of the enemies were scripted to materialise out of thin air behind you when you reached a set point in a room, and one of the best things about Doom 1 and 2 was finding an area with a lot of enemies, but in Doom 3 there were rarely more than three or so enemies in one place at a time. And of course another great Doom 1 and 2 feature was how enemies would fight each other if one accidentally shot another (which made it a good, and fun, tactic to run between them and hope they got hit by friendly fire), but I can't even remember if they did this in Doom 3.
If it plays games it can be spoken about Anyway thanks for bringing this mod to my attention, looks awesome!
The fatality/finishers that you can perform are fucking awesome, & the sprite work done for those various animations looks official. Played this years ago, but I still believe the original creator is updating it (or a fan).
Pretty much my thoughts also. I sometimes call DooM 3 "Half life: Satanic edition" The Game they made is just too different from classic DooM, they should have named it something else imho. It also does not hold much replay value. Its a game you play once then put behind you. Classic DooM has infinite replay value, just doing speed runs and beating your scores, doing level with chainsaw only etc... There is something inherently addictive in the fast gameplay of classic DooM, and the cool music and the overall Badassnes They should have kept that basis and built upon it, with a very strong and competitive multiplayer. Im sure that would have totally worked out. I'm sure there are more people still playing Classic DooM nowadays thas DooM 3. Imho, the closest thing to what DooM 3 should have been is the game PainKiller.
Doom 3 is not a bad game is it just not the real Doom, 3 is too passive not so much enemies ambushing you and not the killing frenzy of the first and second. But this brutal doom it goes with his name because is brutal and I love it.
I was following progress threads. Does it only run on GZDoom? I prefer some of the other Doom Source Ports...-_- if i Have to download another...
According to http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Brutal_Doom it's compatible with ZDoom, GZDoom, Skulltag, and Zandronum. I've played it with GZDoom.
Oh excellent, I use Zdoom and Skulltag mostly. ST for online, even though Carn had some bad beef with me (for no reason really. i guess I just annoyed him in the IRC channel)
