Does anyone know the build date of the copy of PA that was dumped and torrented? I never bothered with the torrent, but I'm cataloguing a collection with one of the original discs and I want to determine if it is the same build that was dumped or a different one. I really don't want to be arsed with trying to find a valid torrent file amongst all the crap sites out there so if someone who has the disc could kindly post the information that would rock. Thanks! -hl718
That is still a heartbreaker.. the game was cancelled so close to its release (us)... I'm sure there are people here that can priovide the information your seeking.
Was it canned due to September 11th or was that just an excuse due to the dwindling Dreamcast market?
Think of it from a 2001 perspective. You have a game that was being positioned as "Quake of the skies." One of the featured levels (that had been shown in previews) was a city level with skyscrapers. Sept 11th hits. NO ONE wanted to be anywhere *NEAR* anything that had to do with planes and destruction of any sort that fall. Looking back with today's PoV it's a different story. Back then, Sept 11th wasn't just a footnote in history. It was a fresh wound. -hl718
I guess they never had the chance to wait, since I think that same year DC's were $50 new. Maybe they just got lazy and didn't want to go and find the code and either erase it or break it. I'll bet, though, if it was released without that level it would have been frowned upon, in the same way that in Japan some 11-year old girl slashed up her friend and they pushed back the release of Battle Royale 2. I know if I had played it I would be screaming taliban gibberish and smashing buildings because i've been exposed to that violence. Art imitates life right?
that didn't stop Fijicom with their Dreamcast release, Bomber Hehhe. Plat bombs to bring down all manner of things including sky scrapers. There's even a mini game that let's you blow the shit out of buildings using a helicopter. Yakumo
I still think the Sept. 11th was just a convenient excuse for them to drop the game, since it wouldn't have been a big seller anyway and Sega were just about to dump the Dreamcast, and nobody probably would've noticed the skyscraper thing because DC games just weren't in the public spotlight anymore. Besides, if 9/11 was really the reason it was never released, how much easier would it have been to just cut the city level out instead of cancelling the whole game?
The game was pretty complete, so we can assume that funding for the title was almost completely spent. A redesign that late in development (removing a level and building, testing and adding a new one to make up for it) would have cost an additional amount of money which Sega wasn't willing (or couldn't afford to) spend.
Wasn't one of the excuses (or reasons) SEGA gave us that they were afraid people would start immitating 9/11 during the online matches?
I always thought that was the entire reason why it was canned. They could have just pulled that level though. Still, Bomber Hehhe! Still got a release in japan. that had you blowing up sky scrapers as well as other stuff. Yakumo
Yeah, it's pretty weird. There's is even one stage in which you have to blow up a building that looks pretty much like one of the twin towers. Once you've beaten that stage, you can also try to destroy it with the helicopter or tank, crazy stuff. My guess would be that a small company like Fujicom couldn't just cancel one of their games because of a recent event in another part of the world. They probably never planned to release it in the states and I can't imagine the Japanese were too upset about it.
Because we in the US would get pissed like we do with everything. Like how Germany removes swastikas from Wolfenstein games.
