Building an Emulatior box with a Intel Nuc

Explain? The NUC is pretty powerful, whereas a thin client doesnt do anything and its all done server side similar to remote desktop.

 

Can't go wrong with an RPI2, especially based on price, plus you can do cool things like Adafruit's Cupcade or 3d print yourself a portable system lol

 

But will a Pi 2 Run Killer Instinct 1 and 2 as well as MK 4?

 

Probably but will run quite slowly. A Jetson is MUCH better suited.

MK4 is likely to be very demanding if you are talking about MAME. The PS1 version could be emulated on the RPi2 well most likely. But it's still the PS1 version.

 

A quad core ARM cortex A15 and a 192 core Kepler w/ 2GB of RAM is better than a Quad core ARM cortex A7 with some shitty Videocore IV and 1GB of RAM.

 

Some chromeboxes are nice too, can be a little cheaper than an NUC. For under 200$ you get a pretty decent little Asus ChromeBox M004U with a Intel Celeron 2955U @ 1.4 GHz, pretty decent as a Kodi/xbmc media server and most probably capable of handling most emulators up to n64, maybe dolphin if not in FullHD. Put in more dollars (~350$) and you get an i3.

 

Chromeboxes are eeehh IMO. Not my cup of tea really.

 

Remove the chrome OS as soon as you get it and put Linux (or Windows) on the thing and it's one of the cheapest yet useful little PC you can get. Heck the thing even runs crysis3 at 20 fps.

I don't wanna make a salesman out of myself, but it's worth knowing that it's an interesting option for low budgets. Celeron is really not what it was before.

 

Seems like Celeron is a bit better than what it was. Still a decent CPU for occasional browsing and casual gaming. Does it run Crysis at low med or high? Interesting seeing how Intel cards are usually gross... and quite picky...

 

There's also a PC version of MK4. That's likely to run faster and will be more accurate to the arcade than using an emulator. You need to have Windows, and I'm not sure how well it would work with newer versions of Windows. I actually have a copy of it sitting in the other room, but it's rather scratched up, so I'm not sure if it works anymore.

 

I tried a few Mame games on the Pi 2 this morning, it was a waste of time it uses a really old version of Mame. Older game work well, I tried Killer Instinct couldn't even get it to load, same goes for Street Fighter 3.

Playstation works really well, I played Resident Evil 3 Exhumed and Ridge Racer all work perfectly.

I wouldn't recommend getting a Pi 2 for Arcade stuff, maybe in a few months things will improve after all the Pi 2 was only just released and most software is still not optimised for it. It's great for Mega Drive a SNES stuff that's why I got mine.

 

The most important part - it isn't emulated properly yet, graphical glitches here and there...
It's easier to emulate MK Gold or run PC version (requires x86 CPU and windows or wine though).

P.S. Yeah, forgot about PSX version.

 

Sounds like I may as well settle on the N64 MK4. Gold is fine but it's not the arcade version. From what I can tell the N64 version is as close to the arcade as I can get (Plus I have an N64)

I got one that I use for Kodi/Home Server and it's really perfect for it; using minimal CPU, drawing minimal wattage and 50x more responsive than my old RPi. I don't know much about MAME though.

 

This looks like a really good option REALLY GOOD.

 

It seems like everyone's missed the main question here: why would anyone want to play MK4?

 

Why did I know before I even click in that this would be your post.

I'm a huge MK fan and while MKX basically replaces MK4 storywise. There are a few good ideas in MK4 like weapons, a few characters that haven't reappeared anywhere besides Armageddon, and the endings are so bad they're good.

 

I think it's probably the worst game in the series (disregarding certain spin-offs): grimdarkness and seriousness in place of the goofy charm and sense of humor that MK 1-3 had, an ugly graphical style and clunky gameplay. Deadly Alliance had weapons and that was...playable, at least.
