:fresh: AWE64's DAC is better than AWE32, but AWE64 lost many things : - simm upgrade, on AWE64 it's proprietary memory module and you need an adapter. - no MIDI daugtherboard upgrade - AWE64 does not have hardware ymf262. It's an emulation through driver. Timing and FM sound are awful (plus, you cannot use Voyetra FM driver). - No ASP chip who manage real time ADPCM compression\decompression + save CPU when playing PCM stream.
This is all gibberish to me. Dont know what any of it means. Think i'll go with 32. It's in the middle
:fresh: :fresh: ;-) Sorry, your are wrong As you can see on this picture of the highest model, it has no daugther board MIDI connector, no simm connector (but it's possible of using an adapter) : The lack of OPL3 FM chip is not realy significant, unless if you like FM synth style BGM (or if you compose music with these sounds) in DOS games. However ASP (or CSP) was very usefull in DOS time to save CPU for playing sample SFX in game. Twimfy ---> Have you an ISA bus on your motherboard ?
I don't have a motherboard yet, but there is a nice Pentium 2 Mobo combo on ebay for £5, it has ISA slots.
This motherboard is perfect for you. With a VGA card like HD3850 AGP is a good old and new gaming machine.
Twimfy: the forum vogons can be very helpful in the direction of what you want when it comes to building a retro rig with all that matters. The only thing that they do not like is abandonware, and yes I know the name is from the trilogy of five books which is called The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy, but these guys are quite the friendly bunch. As long you can behave or else you will feel the heat faster than a fireball can be cast.
I was wondering where you vanished, we missed you ;-) ;-) PS: a collection of five books is a pentalogy, a trilogy is a collection of three =)
Actually, if you have read on the back of one of those books, then you will read that the author called it a trilogy no matter how many books there are in the series. So it is NOT like I was born yesterday I just quote what I read on the back of one of the books. vanished ? actually I took a vacation. And am I back ? not really, I was just being helpful to twimfy, that is it. And to some the vacation hasn't been long enough, so consider my encounters on the forum as visits, and nothing else. and about the "missed you" part, there I call bullshit and bollocks as my only remark.
"A Trilogy in four parts" It says on the back of the fourth book. Anyway, cheers Wolverine for the info. I'm still toying over this idea right now. My finances took a tumble this week so i'm thinking compile an ultimate shopping list now and build later.
I'm sure you could get a lot of parts for the cost of postage. Remember to get a 5.25" drive too so you can load up old ms-dos discs and play games in text mode graphics or CGA...
