OK, I give up. I have a Windows 2000 download that I want to install on an old Win98 PC that I have. I got the OS, but burning it to a CD in a way that boots it up into install is just something that seems to be beyond my grasp. I have a CD-R and I burned it as an ISO file but when I put it into my Win98 machine it doesn't boot anything and it isn't able to ever recognize the type of file it is. I used to be able to do this just fine by fiddling with NERO but now I can't seem to do it at all. Exactly how is the ISO supposed to be burned to where I can insert the CD and have it start the welcome screen to the install process?
You're supposed to burn the ISO file as a disc, not on the disc as a data file. It's an option under Nero somewhere. If you're doing that already, there might be a possibility that the disc you have isn't bootable.
Ah, cool, it worked. Thanks. I had been dragging the file onto the blank disc and burning it. I was wondering why I managed to do it in the past but seemed to have screwed it up. I must have changed the way I brought the file into the program...
Anyway, are you sure you have the BIOS configured correctly? Lots of times you can't boot from a CD because the BIOS is configured so it doesn't look for boot files on the CD drive. Depending on the machine, the option can be Boot Sequence, or Boot order.
btw, not all versions of Windows are bootable ( i have some win98 versions that arent), but I think J-G.com has sorted stuff out already
I actually checked the BIOS to see if that was the problem before I came here, but thanks. I managed to boot it up and install it without any problems.
