ill think doom runs these days on half the laundrymachines, micro waves and coffe machines (m2 port hehehehe would be cool)
also impressive is the ports that are made for quake 2 and quake 3 that run on a phone like the last symbians or iphones

The 32x version had 17 levels (one of them secret) and the SNES had 22, but both of them are incomplete if you compare them to the PC version (that one had 27 levels on the normal version).

I recall finishing DOOM on the Snes over a weekend rental. It was really playable and looked cool back in the day.

Today, I see it and it looks atrocious.

Then again, I didn't have a good PC when I rented DOOM on the Snes, so that may account for my lack of standards.

i still remember the DOOM music from the first level.
I wish I could find that as my ringtone for my iphone via cydia, without the stupid lengths i would have to go to "create" one and install it via itunes.

Still to this day, I hate SNES Doom. It sounds and looks awful.Same to the 32x verison. *shrug*
PSX port and Open source PC versions are where it's at.

Also the 3do(Or the jaguar can't recall) looked pretty decent too

IMO the jag was the closest thing to a PC when it came to those old "3d" games.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying.

I did just look up the Jaguar version, it didn't have music, but it looked the best and played the best that i'd seen of the early console ports.

(totally related self promotion kind of)
Speaking of doom, I've never been able to finish all of Doom 1 and 2. I always got stuck somewhere as a kid. And I really want to, the problem nowdays is that the original game and it's GMidi sound haven't aged too well.
So, thanks to the mods with Open source versions I can run high res textures and lighting(not doing 3D models, they look weird to me). But the music quality still stinks. Even most of the so Called "Remake" soundtrack mods for it are really people just running the midi's through a few patches and not really applying much style or production values.

So what i've been grinding down idea's and WIP's for, the last few months is completely re-recording the music as live audio as if it was played with a band with some creative liberties to make some stuff more "Metal" and/or "Ambient" but still basing it largely on the original Midi/Score.

The whole reason I want to do this is so I can get a more updated and enjoyable experience of the game I fondly loved as a kid but could never complete.

I've thought about releasing this as a Soundtrack mod once it gets finished one day here. But don't even know if there was interest for such a thing, or where I could host is because most sites seem to be outdated nowdays.

Here's an MP3 of a really rough WIP of E1M1 with nothing but guitars(Rough ones too with no EQ'ing or other effects atm) and placeholder drums

on a scale of 100% this is like 30%

32x had poor sound and less levels but better graphics
Snes had better sound and a few more (but still not all of them) and terrible graphics.

SNES version is a golden turd. Bigged up way more than its worth because despite the better sound and the few more levels there are more problems than the 32x

If we're going to bitch about any console port, the Saturn has to be the worst given the power of the machine. It's a fucking joke.

I reckon the PSX port is the best of the early ones. The Jag port runs at a decent clip but the controller is shit and the lack of music is really off-putting.

I liked Saturn Doom, especially the JPN version because it run on 60hz. Next comes the PAl version. The USA version is another story because that basicly an alpha version of the other two.

    Very nice reading :)
Doom it's a nice game and every time is ported to some new "thing", it's always nice and fun to play.

I think it exists also a Doom version for some of the newer television with an SD slot (Samsung, Panasonic, Sony...).

Have you played it recently? Even Japanese Saturn Doom is a mess. Hexen moves smother and that's not a patch on Quake or Exhumed. True, the US Doom is the worst but the Japanese one still plays like crap. Even the 32X version moves smother.

    Here's a video I made of the Japanese Saturn version - http://www.segagagadomain.com/movie-pages/doom.htm

That game is muddy as hell though. Literally just brown everywhere.

Doom on the Jaguar ran well and looked great, but the controller was its biggest down fall. I actually have Doom for my Playstation and I don't think I've ever played it , guess I need to give it a try today if I get a chance !

    Interesting article!

Strange. I thought Hexen was the most jerky out of the two. Sure, Saturn DOOM isn't reallly smooth but I guess it's good enough for me.
