    Hey all!
I was thinking about buying a domain for a website I've been wanting to do for a long time...
I would like to ask for suggestions.

Where's the best/ cheapest place to get it?

    Thanks

Use a coupon for godaddy, $7.00 .coms

Just don't host anything with them at all.

I know these "I have been wanted to do ... for some time now"..
I would suggest you create the website first, host it somewhere where its free/ or even better on your local network.. use a free dyndns hostname if you want it to be reachable from outside etc... when and only when you think it's really finished and worth something then you buy a domain and take a host.

I know people that are spending money for years now on a "project" never finished.

Why not? I have a Deluxe Godaddy hosting service since 2008 and besides the crappy control panel I had no troubles at all with it...

Is there anything I should know?

Dreamhost is what you need! More bandwidth than you'll ever need and very good prices.

I use namecheap for my domain registration. Virtually the same price as godaddy, without the need to advertise with girls having wardrobe malfunctions or other cheap gimmicks.

lolwut? You pay good money, yet still have to put up their pr0n ads? If that's true (too lazy to check), I don't understand why they have even a single customer.

Btw, while you're still working on the site, you might not need/want a server that's always on. I've seen places offering "on demand servers", where you get full root access to a VM and only pay for when it's actually up and running. One such place is www.jiffybox.de (which unfortunately is german-only (but not germany-only), but you'll probably find others as well), great way to keep costs low until the site gets going in my opinion.

Thank you all for your advices.
I'll follow port187's idea, I guess he's right. I must start planning everything first and then think about that.
In the meantime with your suggestions I now know better what to choose for when I'm ready =)
