Alright guys, sometime December I'm going to buy a DS, but I'm really wanting to import a japanese one because I want a black one and not bunghole blue or silver. Since 150$ isn't a small amount of money (for me anyway), I just want to doublecheck before I make a mistake. Basically, I'm asking, If I buy a japanese Nintendo DS, what I'm getting is basically the same thing system-wise as a US one, right? The DS is totally region free, games from anywhere work on it like Game Boy, and theres no language barrier since you can change language settings? I won't get any engrish on the menu? Another question is about the firmware for the system, it hasn't changed ever has it, for both regions? No new stuff I'd use, just security stuff? Last question is about the Wi-Fi and internet stuff, since it's a japanese DS there's not gunna be any funkyness if I try to use it with people in the US and such? Basically, I think you get it, is me buying a japanese DS basically me buying an american DS with a decent color? Thanks guys, I've never bought a japanese region system before so I'm just making sure before I blow 150$.
If I buy a japanese Nintendo DS, what I'm getting is basically the same thing system-wise as a US one, right? Yes The DS is totally region free, games from anywhere work on it like Game Boy, and theres no language barrier since you can change language settings? Yes, though you may have to navigate initially in japanese to change the language settings, I can't remember 1st boot on the DS I won't get any engrish on the menu? Once you change the language to english, no Another question is about the firmware for the system, it hasn't changed ever has it, for both regions? No No new stuff I'd use, just security stuff? There hasn't been any changes at all since launch I believe Last question is about the Wi-Fi and internet stuff, since it's a japanese DS there's not gunna be any funkyness if I try to use it with people in the US and such? No - But generally a japanese game can only play with other japanese games, US with US etc. except for game sharing, which will work with any regions Basically, I think you get it, is me buying a japanese DS basically me buying an american DS with a decent color? Yup Thanks guys, I've never bought a japanese region system before so I'm just making sure before I blow 150$. No worries
I've got the white Japanese DS, and my US Mario Kart DS runs on it just fine. WiFi settings are done via the game. You can switch the DS' language settings from Japanese into English when you power it on for the first time.
Alrighty, looks good, I figured there'd be no probs. I can't wait for a DS now! Thanks steadster and people.
i would like to take the moment and sujjest using lik-sang to import one of those bad boys..........and if i may, get electroplankton with it, amazing game, if not a little weird.......your going to be thankful
Well....I wen't to go place my order on Lik-Sang....and the shipping is wayyyy high at 23$+. Playasia is about 20$....eStarland looks to be about 5-10$, is this place decent?
Yes, there have been firmware changes since the initial run of the DS units. Newer DS units are more difficult to run homebrew software on. Not a major difference, but it does qualify as a firmware change. -hl718
Or he could just wait - Electroplankton's getting a US release in January. It's only sold through the Nintendo Online Store, tho.
i wonder if this will be a new market, where nichie games are sold only online, i give nintendo credit for this strategy as most who want usually are the ones that know about it online as well as import stuff and such.
your correct, which seems a shame, as its a great game....it loses some of its "amazingness" after awhile, but still is an incredible game.....plus the ntsc version doesnt come with headphones or that mesmerizing(as in i starred at it for 40 minutes) box cover sleeve
