Hi all. Yup, I'm considering it - I may buy a PSTV to play some of Vita's stuff. I'm doing the research to see what's compatible these days. One thing I'd like to know is if I could play more games with the Dualshock 4. I heard hitting the touchpad brings up some on-screen cursors for touch options. Is that true? Also, are there more games that work that aren't listed in Sony's compatibility list? Any help is appreciated.
First the compatibility list depends on the region. Some games only work in the US, other only on the European region and so on. This is very importat for PS1 and PSP classics. Check here: http://thevitalounge.net/forum/thre...ompatible-games-topic-update-11-26-2014.1402/ And here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_Vita_games As for the touchpad, i don't know much more than what the manual suggests: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/pstv/game/touchpointer.html It probably doesn't do much in game, other than messing with the menus. But i'm not sure about that. I thought the PSTV was a good idea at first, but Sony really dropped the ball. They were so dumb to release this without Netflix and other major streaming services, not to mention the lack of multiple users (the same problem of the Vita). They promote the PSTV as a PS4 remote player, but what if someone have multiple accounts on the PS4? They shoud've also made more PSP and PS1 games available / compatible and lowered the prices for their memory cards. In the end i'll only get one of those when it hits bargain bins. It was a good idea done terribly.
Wait, there are PSP and PS1 Classics that the PSTV can't play? I mean, I can see it with Vita games that require the touchpad or touchscreen, but all the functions of a PSP or PS1 can easily be done on a Dualshock 3, and doesn't the Vita have a PSP emulator built in?
Kind of. For example, Crash Bandicoot games can be bought and played on Vita / PSTV if you have an european account, but somehow you can't buy and play them on USA accounts. They are only available for PS3 and PSP. Even if you purchase them on the online store on a computer or on the PS3, you won't be able to download on Vita / PSTV. It's that dumb. The "digital world" most companies are pushing still have lots of issues, mostly because of licenses and stuff like that. Just look at how many succesful titles still aren't availabe on their online stores. To this day, Gran Turismo (the best sellling game on PS1!) still isn't available on any PSN region.
That's because officially, to Sony's way of thinking, there are superior GT titles on both PS3 and PSP. FWIW, I don't agree, the original game is in many ways still my favourite of the series.
Wow, thanks for the eye-opening replies, everyone. To think, if Sony just implemented video out like the PSP, most of this garbage would have been avoided.
Indeed. Video-out would be fantastic. There IS a modification you can do but it's somewhat proprietary so it is far from cheap. Still, as the owner of two Vitas (3G 1000 and a 2000), I have to say that I love the console. Sony, however, doesn't appear to love it any more. The 3DS would have failed just as badly if Nintendo didn't step up their game and fixed the mess that is the 3DS, and the 3DS still has lesser hardware (and a worse OS, in my opinion), so Sony have no real excuse. I think it's too late for the Vita, now, but it's still worth buying. To me, the Vita is almost like the Dreamcast - it's a good console that will die too soon because it just hasn't done terribly well.
My advice, steer clear of the PSTV, it's another epic failure from Sony (if they'd only listened to their fans..).
