So, I'm in the market for a new computer monitor, and I'm pretty sure about what I want: a 27" WQHD (2560x1440) LCD. I have it narrowed down to 2 models I'm considering:

    ASUS PB278Q

    or

    Dell U2713M

I definitely want one of these 2 monitors, I'm just not sure which one. I've read quite a bit about both of them, and I've seen the PB278Q in person. Apparently they're both very good monitors, though they both have issues with quality control. This isn't a big deal for me - if I get a defective unit, I can just send it back. I've heard some people say the Dell has better image quality, and I've heard that the ASUS has less input lag. However, there doesn't seem to be a consensus on which is the better monitor overall. The ASUS uses PLS, and the Dell uses IPS (not sure which version).

What I'll be using it for: gaming (I have an awesome gaming PC), regular PC use (web browsing, listening to music, etc.), occasional photo and video editing, and some design work. I want it to have very high image quality, and I also want low input lag, although the latter is not as important. I'm leaning slightly towards the ASUS, just because I've had good experiences with ASUS products, and my current monitor is made by ASUS. Also, the ASUS is slightly cheaper. However, I've also read that a lot of these monitors use very similar components, so the difference probably isn't very significant.

So, anyone have any experience with these monitors? Which one is better overall?

Heh, if one less input lag (good for gaming) and the other has slightly better picture quality (video/photo editing...) you've got quite the toss up! Which would you do more?

Which is more important? IMO, if they're the same resolution and same type of panel (LED or LCD) and same size - you could calibrate the colors of the Asus to meet your photo/video editing needs while having better input.

I have not been in the market for a display lately. Wondering how good IPS have become compared to TN panels regarding input lag?

I am using an ASUS display and the input lag is excellent. It is TN however.

I'm not sure about the input lag. One source said that the ASUS has less input lag, but another said that it has significant lag. I played Portal 2 on one I saw at a computer store, and I didn't notice any input lag. I'm not sure how the Dell fares. I'm going to be using the dual-link DVI, so it probably won't make a huge difference either way, but it's still a concern.

DELL = real cheap shit or at least everythin Ive ever seen will the Dell brand has been. Asus have never given me any issues at all. Have two Asus netbooks, an Asus monitor and ne of the best DAC sound cards out there, also by Asus. H, I have a Nexus 7 too. Asus make them, don't they?

Agreed completely. Dell products have always seemed cheap to me, ASUS, on the other hand, has yet to disappoint me. Had a monitor and motherboard by them, both top notch.

I sell the 21.5 and 23 inch version of the Dell monitor as part of my job. If the 27 inch is the same quality I'd say go for it. They are the most gorgeous monitors I've seen in a long time. Crisp and bright after being on 24/7 for months running a demo loop, so they're fairly well constructed as far as I can tell.

I would not suggest Dell anything. Dell designs most of they're products to be cheap, easy to work on, and to have a standardized parts architecture. This is great if you have a business with a support contract, but not for a consumer that wants their product to be extremely reliable.

What dell loses in quality control, they make up for great customer service. But that only really applies if you have a support contract where they will be on the premises in less than four hours.

Asus is a great choice. Quality stuff and if it breaks for aome reason or another, they're not picky at all when it comes to free service/repair under warranty. I once had an obviously stepped on laptop and they fixed the screen, no questions asked. I can't say the same about my previous dell laptop...
