sony stops the production and another interesting format is about to vanish... i never had one but wished for it many times... those were supposedly great for field recording at concert and similar...
I had one, but sold it, my brother still has his, but doesn't use it anymore, I shall buy it from him. I love the haptic of MiniDiscs, I love cartridges in general. MiniDiscs also look cool.
Yeah, my friend is a musician and he used MD for recording quite often. Can't imagine there's any point in using it these days.
I still use mine from time to time. I'm still looking for a few retail albums on MD, mostly Gescom (Autechre)'s album MiniDisc which was, for a while, the only album -only- released on the MD (until a CD version was produced later). I have a bootleg copy of it that I made, but I want it for my collection. I've got a dozen rewriteable discs which should be enough for me, but I may just have to pick up a few packs of them to stash away for a rainy day.
i was thinking of buying one and a good microphone when i went to uematsu's concert some years ago... sadly i was broken at that time too if i'll ever get better in money i might thing getting one in case i'll go to some other concerts
I've been lightly considering getting one of these for many uses, but with my lack of knowledge in the minidisc department I've kept myself from doing so. Can anyone let me know of the best possible bang-for-your-buck Sony minidisc player? Also can one burn songs to a minidisc directly through the player?
On most of them you can record but not all of them. I have one of the higher end ones I might part with.
So I'll tell you my MD story. I had a SONY MZR-55 for a long time. Had OK battery life. But at the time, it was awesome. You see the Diamond RIO (One of the first portable MP3 Player) came out and it used Smart Media. 16 MB and 32 MB cards were very expensive (at the time). So my girl friend visited me from Japan and asked what I wanted. I told her an MD player. The MZR-55 was about the same size of the Diamond RIO, could hold a full 74 minute audio on a MD. A MD costs only a few dollars (US) and you had quality that sounded way better than 128 kbps MP3. Although it used spinning discs, SONY had a huge cache in these things to they never skipped. (OK, only Sith's talk in extremes, so maybe I should say almost never) The only sucky thing at the time was that you had to record in real time. So you would place a CD and connect it via Optical cable and how ever long the CD was, the recording would take. Remember that though at the time a Pentium 100 MHz was more or less mainstream so ripping and encoding a CD took forever anyway. CD-Burners were super expensive too. Not to mention the media was like $15/disc. Time goes on, and MP3 Players get much better and cheaper. I move to MP3 (and or FLAC) like everyone else. I only buy CD's still when I buy my music. Something about owning a physical copy. I know lots of you are like that. I'll never forget my MD player. Great little investment during college. Deka. I might have a one or two sitting around. Maybe I should look for it. Give it a little love.
I just ordered a Sony MZ-E40 MD player off of eBay. It appears to be in very good condition, and the price was reasonable. One thing I didn't realize, when I bought it, is that it's only a player - not a recorder. Which sucks, because I wanted a recorder. Although, the main reason I wanted it was for playing, so it's not a huge loss. I have a bunch of Minidiscs I recorded as a child, including some that had conversations I'd recorded of me and my friends. I want to access those recordings, and I also just want to bask in nostalgia. I would've bought the same player/recorder I used to have (Sharp MD-MS702), but the only one I could find was pretty expensive, and it didn't come with a battery.
Sony did invent a great format but as always their hardware wasn't that great. Sharp were the best at Mini Disc the Panasonic I heard. I still use my Mini Disc to this day for recording some stuff. It is sad to see it go but in this time we really don't need it With all the digital options we have now.
I found a MiniDisc recorder MZ-R50 at the op-shop, I posted it in the "Post every time you buy something" thread: http://www.assemblergames.com/forum...hing-Part-VIII&p=634201&viewfull=1#post634201 Initially it wouldn't take a disk, it just said "Read error". Took it completely apart, cleaned the lens and the magnetic head, and now it works a treat.
That is the model I had! The recording was broken on mine though, but I got it for a great price from a friend in 2000 (100 Deutschmarks), and sold it on eBay in 2009 almost without loss (still got 53€ for it, only loss was inflation).
I've never used a Sony MD player before, so I honestly don't know. I'll know soon enough. It does look very attractive, though. It looks surprisingly modern, considering when it was made. One device I've always wanted since I first saw one in a Sony Store in Chicago many years ago, is a Sony DCM-M1 Minidisc Camcorder. It's what it sounds like: it's a camera that records video to a Minidisc.
that sounds very appealing, and interesting, i've been looking into making a movie, and what options were available in the video recording department, i've seen the mini dvd ones but not a minidisc recorder
I'll ever understand why Sony didn't used the Minidisc "cassete" format for the PSP. The UMD format they used, without any sort of shutter protection, looks so cheap.
