    [SOLVED]...

    Hi there;
    There's a Mega CD (front-loader) I've been eyeing up for sale but it doesn't come with any wires. The power lead is easily enough solved- I can just use a multi-voltage adaptor- but I can't remember if the setup for a Mark 1 was anything like the 32X, where you needed a cable to link it to the MD itself.

    Also, to save me putting my new purchase at the will of a multi-volt adaptor, does anywhere sell replacements?

    Any answers appreciated.

    My memory is that if you're wanting to use an RGB cable then you'll run into problems with the audio configuration, but I can't remember the exact issue now. As far as the two unit interfacing with each other, the Megadrive has a socket on the side and the MCD1 clamps on with a bracket, no wires involved.

    You'll need a double ended 3.5mm headphone jack lead to go between the headphone socket on the MD and the headphone socket on the rear of the Mega CD. I think it's labelled 'mixing' or something.

    So it was the 32X I was thinking of, then. That's good news.
    _SD_, I'm at a loss to what you're talking about. Why would I link two output sockets together? Isn't sound carried to the Mega CD through the side connector? No setup I've ever seen before has a mixing wire attached to it.

    Not that I don't believe you, I just think I might have you from the wrong angle. You don't have a picture of what you're referring to by any chance, do you?

    It's not carried through the side connector. If you want to hear the Megadrive audio along with the Mega-CD audio (out the back connectors on the Mega-CD) you'll need to hook up the headphone jack.

    This causes the problems I was alluding to with RGB SCART cables - I think if your SCART cable doesn't have a custom connector for the Mega-CD's audio jacks or your TV's RGB SCART channel doesn't have extra audio jacks in then you won't hear anything except the Megadrive's audio.

    If you have a MD2 & MCD2 then you don't need any extra wires. The MCD2 will do the audio over the edge connector so you can just use a standard RGB Scart lead from the MD. Pity that the set-up still requires two PSUs.

    As for the original MD and MCD, you'll want one of these, except longer and preferably in black:

    Luckily for me, I have one spare. Thanks for the tip, that seems like the sort of thing that would really irritate me. So I assume Megadrive audio would be things like the sound effects, while the Mega CD would put out the CD audio?
    You'd think Sega would have had some foresight to fix an oversight like this!

    I haven't seen the schematics, but my guess would be that the MD2 was fixing the oversight in the first place. It might have been wiser not to release the half-arsed expansion units in the first place, but there you go.
