I was just reading that there's a new HDMI cable on the market which can do both audio and video in one cable. And I thought to myself...."another f*ing cable?"

I've spent over $100 for cables over the past month while I moved my equipment around. A 5 meter optical cable. A 5 meter S-video cable. A PC Link cable. A USB repeater. Now I have a box of just cables that I'm not using right now. How did I end up with 5 short USB cables? I had to buy a firewire cable to hook up my camcorder....which I've done exactly once. That one goes in the "to be found later if needed" area. I have an extra LAN cable because when traveling in the US I had to buy it to use in my hotel room. I have strips of extra coax from when I used to use that, 2 sync cradles for items that I don't use anymore, and a half dozen phone charging cables.

Has the world gone cable mad?

Well if your complaining about the price on cables, that shouldnt be a problem if you shop a reputable place that sells high quality cables for a sane price. I seen some HDMI cables in Best Buy yesterday, 100$...lol! The hilarious thing is the signal is Digital, so its either working or its not, theres no signal degredation yet they (monster cable and the like) are still trying to push snake oil on you.

A good site I found is www.monoprice.com (no im not getting a commision XD). Always have the stuff I need, at awesome prices (HDMI cables range from like 3$ to 10$) and are all high quality.

HDMI is DVi-D+Audio. I m not aware of any logical overhead differences or video/audio sync capabilities on the wire.

Except an HDMI port must support HDCP, whereas seperate DVI +audio ports don't

You are paying for the extended lifespan of the cable.

I think snake oil is more like it :) With the money saved you can buy another cable and connector lube many times over.
