Now i don't know if this was a real call or not considering the way it happened. I was going to call my cable company about my bill and when i turned on the phone I didn't have a dial tone. I hung up and turned it on again, and still no tone, so i said "why don't I have a dial tone". Next thing i know someone is saying "anyone there?" So i said yes, and the guy goes "are you Shawn?" and I say yes. He says hes from Microsoft and hes been informed that i have an xdk and that I have it for sale on eBay, Craigslist, or some other selling website. I say no, to which he says something on the lines of its Microsoft property and if i even know what an xdk is and i say no. He then says okay thank you for you time to which I say okay and hangs up. Now what i'm wondering is if this is a REAL call or someone playing some sort of prank/scam? I did not have one up on eBay or craigslist, and someone asked me to list one on another website for them, but after i posted it about two weeks ago, i never bumped or anything as it's hasn't been anywhere close to the first page since then. Any thoughts on this whole escapade?
I've seen a few of these before, although i have never heard of anyone getting in trouble. The general consensus is that it's fake and has been spread around quite a lot, but i cant be 100% certain.
Microsoft if they cared would subpoena your ip, then send you legal notice. Unless you were making a shitstorm of internet news or selling stolen kits they would care less.
Have you received any other inbound calls on that phone since then? Is it too late to *69 and discover the number that made that call?
Did he have an accent? The vast majority of scammer calls I get are from people with accents, presumably in another country.
Wow, thank you all for responding! I'll just respond to each question down the list. I haven't gotten another call, but the thing is i guess i picked up the phone as soon as the call was coming in, so it didn't even register on any caller ID. As for an accent no, but i can say the way he carried out the conversation didn't seem too professional. I would assume that you would start a call saying where your from and asking for the given person instead of just saying are you Shawn? I haven't made any news, posted any videos, or anything at all. Just really didn't feel that safe knowing that someone knows my home number, as its not really hooked up to any account I have online anywhere. Once again thanks to everyone that's trying to clear the situation up for me <3
