I'm looking at purchasing a digital camera and am looking for any recomendations. Preferebly digital SLR, around 1000 and in the 8-10mp range. I'm looking at the Cannon D20 and the Nikon D80 currently, but am open to other brands/manufacturers.

Just curious to see if there's any photographers here.

I hear a lot of good things from Canon cameras. Thats what I plan on getting in the future. I know someone in California who bought a 5.0MP Cannon Digital Rebel SLR almost a year ago and shown me some very great pictures he took. If you get an SLR, spend more on a top quality lens to get some really good, upclose pictures. My girlfriend also has the same 5megapixel model. Nikon's are also good, I see a lot of professionals carrying those around. I guess your decision depends on the features that these cameras due, rather than the quality of pictures.

Samsung NV7 OPS (really good image stabalization). About 400$ at Circuit Cities across the US.. Just got it, its just released. Pics:

I got about 80-90 some pictures before the battery died. OPS really drains it, but it was on almost all the time for those pics I took. Its really good actually, a lot better than my previous cam. Two or three batteries spare and your set [IMG] They are only like 15$.

I've used a 300D and 350D and i've seen the 20D (gf's brother has it). Looks like a kickass camera, very good pics especially with the nice lenses he's got for it.

Nikon all the way, but be prepared to fork out on the lenses. Once I go DSLR thats where I am spending the cash.

That's my intention as well. Nikon has been getting nothing but rave reviews from my friends and colleagues.

I have the D70s, which has been replaced by the D80, and it is great. The lens that usually comes with it is pretty good. I'd recommend an external flashgun - Nikon do a good kit with the flash (in the UK at least) that comes with a lens brush, remote and some other bits. Or you could go 3rd party, e.g. Sigma.

Yeah, lenses are expensive for Nikon, but again, 3rd party aren't bad. Oh, and they are WAY cheaper in the US... but if you don't live there, beware! Nikon will ONLY honour warranties in Country of origin!

If you have either a Canon or Nikon SLR, then go with same make, as you'll most likely be able to use the lenses, as long as they're AF.

BTW, mentioning where you're from (or filling in that part of your profile) helps ;) You want to spend 1000 WHAT? GBP? USD? £1000 = $1850, so there's a big difference!

My camera history is the following... 2003 i bought my first one a "Minolta Dimage 7i" (almost DLSR;-)) i was very happy with it and decised to stay Minolta... so my second camera (2006) was a "KonicaMinolta Dynax 5d" (Minolta had merged with Konica) It is a true DLSR, only 6mp but it was cheap:nod:
And now i have plans for my third camera wich will also be Minolta... sort of... since Sony bought Minoltas DLSR part, so even of it will be under Sony brand it's still developed and manufactured by Minolta, it's the "Sony Alpha (A100)" i am talking about.

All pics on my arcade PCB collection webpage are done with "Dynax 5d" using the cheap kit lens.

I use the Canon Ixy 5.0 and I don't recommend it, but it sounds like with your preference for SLR you'll be spending a lot more than that. The Canon I have is poor at adjusting the white balance indoors. I did some research after I bought it and found that to be a common problem, and it happens to be a big problem since I'm taking pictures of a lot of game console indoors.

By the way, I'd recommend going to www.dpreview.com to see some good reviews, including standardised test shots. If you want any shots from my D70s, let me know!
