Let me first of all say, I am NOT looking for a free host. Just a host that doesn't cost the Earth, and is reliable, with a decent package.

It needs to be able to run ASP pages, so a Microsoft server (I'm not sure what to think about those PHP ones that are ASP capable).

I would like a fair amount of space, and bandwidth.

It doesn't have to be in the UK (US would probably be good as it is cheaper!), but it DOES have to allow customers from the UK. Does anyone know of any problems using a US web host?

I was going to go with a company in the UK, but I found out that their US department has the same package for less, and you get more bandwidth and certain other better features! They won't allow customers from outside the US (they want to make more money off us in the UK), and I object to this.

Someone out there must be a web designer, or clued up on hosting! :-D

n/m, you said the dreaded "ASP" word. I'm a designer, but I don't work with IIS -- for a reason. ;)

Well, my site has been designed in ASP because that's what my web designer knows. Also, I don't like the usual look of PHP, especially PHPNoob... I mean Nuke :smt083

Oh, and check out one of my favourite sites, www.play.com - it is one of the UK's largest online DVD retailers, who now have expanded into CDs and games. My site will have a similar purpose as theirs, to sell stuff. If it works for them (and their traffic must be huge), it'll work for me. No I don't like all this copy and paste lets-make-your-site-look-like-the-others Actinic crap or anything like that, it is being custom written for me.

So umm yeah, if you know of a host that either does run Microsoft servers as well as Linux, or they run Linux with ASP implemented and you think that's OK, then sure, let me know :)

Oh, and I'm sure people on here will be familiar with the following sites:

www.gameplay.co.uk - one of the UK's largest online/postal game retailers
www.buyritegames.com - OK, I hate them and so do other people, but its a web shop in ASP

    and then there's...

www.nick.co.uk - large television network... adam-james, you about? hehe

Sometimes PHP can be done well, but I don't know enough about it to do it myself, and it would mean spending a LOT more on a web designer!

I host my site with http://www.brinkster.com/ recently they have just moved to brand new servers too and dropped their prices. The speed of their servers is quite fast too which is very useful if you plan on using many images like my site. Their service is also very good with 24/7 service help desk that acutally reply withing an hour or two. I now have the Professional Package that only costs 7 dollars 95 per month. For that I get :
    • 1 Free Domain Name (I don't use this since I'd already bought mine :smt030 )
    • 1000 MB Web Space
    • 30 GB Web Traffic
    • 400 Email Accts
    • ASP/ASP.NET/PHP
    • MS Access/MySQL
    • Web Site Builder
    • Web Hosting Value!
    and FTP access for uploading.

Not bad at all for the price.

Not sure if these folks meet your needs, but it's who I'm going with when I get off my butt and start a site.

I duno, We still use PHP4 for our buisness site. We are curently in the process of moving over to Mambo
    http://www.mamboserver.com

Should check it out, way cool stuff there. Anyway we have our own rack server that we use to sell web space on at a really low rate, but im pretty sure now we just use it for ourselves and clients all ready on it. The money we made of it just wasnt worth the time involved.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. Some interesting sites there. That Powweb seems to be a very good offer, but unfortunately they run linux server it seems, without ASP. Yakumo's suggestion may indeed be the right one, I've always liked the idea of ASP with PHP on the same server... can set up a phpBB forum!! :-D

You asked about any points worth noting about non-UK based ISPs.

I've ran into problems in a few areas that's worth bearing in mind:

    1. Many US ISPs don't deal in .UK domain names...they fob you off to a UK company to set up the domain name and DNS servers. It's a pain and ideally it's good to get the one company to look after the lot (host the site and the domain name).

    2. Don't go for the cheapest - your support will be non-existant and it sucks when you really need support.

    3. Check that there servers are .NET, if they're ASP then they will almost certainly be .NET by now, but best be sure and ask.

    4. If you want a database, then check their prices for SQL Server beforehand(assuming you're going that route). Alternatively ask if they'll allow a DSN to an Access database(this should be free!) - it's a cheap database solution.

    5. If you link the domain name to a company (legal entity in the UK in Companies House) then get the domain name registered by a UK company. There are links between legal entities and domain names in the UK and the US ISPs don't necessarily appreciate this.

    6. Try and get to see some existing hosted sites by them - check out the speed of the sites, gives you an idea what yours might be like.

    7. Be aware that because of the time difference you'll find they may perform out of hours maintenance that will NOT be out of hours in the UK!

Yakumo's sounds good and sounds cheap (normally a contradiction in terms), but if Yakumo's used it for a while then I'd go with his suggestion....

Thanks for those points Bert, some I hadn't thought of there! :smt023

    Well, what do you think?

My current host (domain only) was originally my choice, which would be this package:

    http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/...3C32D1B62B35FB70A83E27B276.TC31b?__frame=_top

Yakumo's sounds good, in which case I'd go for this package:

    http://www.brinkster.com/Hosting/Professional.aspx

One thing that would be quite nice about Yakumo's - if they offer ASP and PHP at the same time (I know with some hosts its either/or), then I could have my own phpBB forum for the site. That could be quite handy.

I wasn't too impressed with the fact that my company's US branch had the same package (click here) with more features at a cheaper price! I was alerted to this by their UK support team inadvertently linking me to the US signup page instead of the UK one!!! They won't accept UK customers on that site, and the UK team say they can't see why I'm upset, the companies are totally seperate and the packages cannot be compared (hmm, same site layout, US site links to UK site, same names for packages, very similar specs....)!!!

I thought that £8.99 + VAT per month, with 12 months payable up front, for 20Gb space and 20Gb bandwidth per month wasn't too bad. Then I saw that their US branch offered 20Gb space and 50Gb bandwidth for $12.99 per month, with a minimum contract of 3 months! That equates to around $6 more for 30Gb less bandwidth per month! Oh, but we get 150 subdomains as opposed to 50.... but hang on...... extra sub domains just means we could use up our bandwidth even quicker! :smt083

    Hehe thanks :smt023

Got a problem with Yakumo's host, argh!

    Code:
How much would it cost to have my domain transferred to you?

We do not currently accept domain name transfers. To use your domain with a Brinkster account you will need to point the domain name to our name servers NS1.Brinkster.com and NS2.Brinkster.com.

    Also a shame...

    Hmm, dunno what to do.
