I was thinking about using white vinyl dye to colour my SNES, which is yellowing a bit, but I was wondering if it would actually make a difference and if the yellowing would still show through as the dye bonds with the existing plastic?
Is the yellowing light it might no show, but if is heavy I think it might show. Also depend of the dye you're going to use.
The yellowing isn't that bad, but I just wanted to clean it up a bit. I can't really be bothered with Retr0briting it (especially given that I don't own UV lamps and it's now November and I live in England) and dying seems like a simpler solution to painting it (with better finishes). I would really like to do it white, but black wouldn't necessarily be the end of the world.
A dye may not stop it from discoloring. I have not seen any studies of where someone had tried to dye the fire retardant plastic, with updates.
I have used vinyl dye before on cartridges, it covers really well. I also have an NES controller I dyed white several years ago, it has never rubbed off just a little dirty now from my hands. Make sure you use several light coats and use in a well ventilated room or outside, the fumes are pretty bad.
Why not just do retr0bright? You can do that, and then if you want to get it _even_ whiter, go for a white dye after that process. Would be better for the plastic anyway, as you are "reversing" the yellowing progress by using retr0bright. http://retr0bright.wikispaces.com/ EDIT: And never mind, I did not read your post about not being bothered to do that.
I'll probably try and retro0brite something during the summer. I might also try out the dyes on something like a PSone first to see how the colours react with the light grey of the console before I move on to my SNES.
