Search for 'DreamX' or 'Friendtech', they used to make a 1.4ghz CPU/128mb RAM Xbox upgrade.

I remember those....they were pricey. They'd also paint them and stuff.

They were just hacked xbox unit, and the speed wouldn't show unless you ran linux or something similar.

No, the "upgraded" xbox isn´t a fake. You could send, and pay for the "upgrade", and well the main cpu in the xbox is a celeron processor. So what they did was first of all, put a faster celeron cpu in it, and the other stuff.

FriendTech dissapeared a while ago but the upgrade was pretty cool. There was a version of MAME that worked great with the extra ram and XBMC took advantage of it also.

I remember it being pretty damn expensive though and there was decent wait to get the service done.

I read a few reviews on the dreamX and it seemed to have all sorts of issues running standard X-Box software, making the upgrade fairly useless overall. They installed a switch that would toggle it back to factory X-Box specs which is the only way most games would run properly.

Sounded like a neat idea but, unless youre gonna wright completely new software for it it was pretty worthless.

They desoldered the Xbox's CPU and put a 1Ghz celeron with a swith to turn it 700Mhz (normal speed) or 1Ghz.

I remember they charged a lot for it, and werent responsible if the thing didnt work properly so it was a crappy deal overall..

I think MS, since the Xbox uses costly off the shelf parts, could have made a Xbox 1.5 (like this one) and offer it like a deluxe version that would run games with better graphics and stuff, like a highend PC does when compared to midend ones.

Then they could sell it at double the Xbox price or even more, and get some profit back from the subsidized prices of the normal SKU.
