I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post this or if it should go in with Ebay discussion, so feel free to move.

    I just came across this:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110226243421&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=001

Does anyone know exactly what it would take to repair, or if it could be repaired? It is my understanding that Treamcasts use real DC hardware, but I'm unsure of what components are shitty/unreliable and unique to Treamcasts only. I have always kind of wanted one. This appears to be one of the original/early releases as it comes with the Saturn-style controllers and MP3 remote. I have another DC that I could use for parts swapping if thats what it would take. Is this more trouble than its worth, or even possible to fix? I know the newer Treamcasts have Samsung TFT displays and whatnot, but I like this older release and controllers. Please get back ASAP. Thanks a lot.

Well, the Treamcast does use real Dreamcast parts. there just goes stories of how it came to be a treamcast, and not a Dreamcast, And one of the is, that the Treamcast is a Dreamcast clone, which is in some ways a lie. It is a modified Dreamcast. With a name change, but correct me if I am wrong.

It's a bit more shagged than it initially appears, though.

In the q&a section, he notes that the orange light doesn't come on, and the machine does not boot to the Dreamcast menu.

    It's more than a broken GD-ROM, that's for sure.

Hmm, personally I'd steer clear. And I'd be in a position to repair it!

General rule of thumb: if you have to ask the question can it be repaired, don't buy it!

Yeah I think I will pass on it. I was hoping that perhaps someone knew what the problems might be as I am no stranger to electronics repair, etc....but without more info and the possibility that the problem could be the result of hardware proprietary to Treamcast(s) only, it is likely more trouble than its worth to fix (if it even can be fixed).

Well, according to what I read on this auction, only the gd-rom drive is faulty. WHen a gd-rom drive isn't connected properly (broken connection port or cuted trace) the dreamcast don't boot anything at all, no video output : nothing beside the ornage led and the fan.

It "seems" to be this, and if it wasn't in UK I'd buy it right away.

So, don't blindly trust me on that one but i'm kinda sure it's this (and maybe other things also of course).

Well then, it migh be the controller PCB that's dead or the PSU, nothing that can't be replaced...
