It's a little website icon that will appear left of the address and in linkbars/bookmarks and so on. It just looks nice if you click on my link above you will see what i mean. I thought off "ass" too, with similar results to the one above.. But then i thought, how about a pixelated butt cheek..... Ah, not such a great idea either.
BTW, with modern browsers there is no need to add html code anywhere. Just having a favicon.ico in the root directory of the site will have it show up automatically in Firefox and IE.
vBulletin is different though, to display the Favicon, you have to modify the "headinclude" section of your style to get it to show up. I installed one on my forum yesterday.
It works in Fire Fox at home but it doesn't seem to be working on IE here in work. I think I'll add one to my site yakumo
