So a few days back My dvd drive stopped working. It will not show in my computer. So i thought the cable must have come loose. Opened the computer made sure cable was in firmly. still no dvd drive. opened device manager and found my dvd drive and it says the driver is corrupted or missing. Fair enough. I go to reinstall the driver. and it says it can't find my dvd drive. basically I think im up shit creek with it. anyone can help?
Try it in a different computer. If it works there, you really need it in your current rig, and have already exhausted the usual steps, it may end up quicker in the long term to just call it quits and reinstall Windows.
Windows 7. so the values thing is out of the question if it only works on XP. I haven't actually reformatted with windows 7 yet. If i do will all my drivers automatically install. I dont wanna have to go through and redownload all the drivers for the devices.
Shouldn't need to install drivers for the DVD drive in the first place, but for the big things (like graphics and sound) you will want to go to the vendor and get specific drivers.
I dont have a sound or graphics card in at the moment. (I just run speakers off the mobo ports) So Ill probably reformat tomorrow.
A simple way to test your drive out would be to use an Ubuntu Live-CD and see if your drive shows up.
Ha I was about to suggest the same thing. Often I'll use different OS' under VMWare to test hardware that seems to malfunction too. Last time I did it was with an old Intel webcam I got from visiting The Screen Savers back in the day when it didn't work on Windows 7. Worked fine under XP with VMWare.
I finally got around to reformatting and its working fine. Christ knows how the drivers knackered in the first place.
