A while ago I was downloading Resi Evil 2 for the DC (I lost my PAL copy when I moved) and a bit later while checking my ISP's webmail (which I don't use) I found this:

Now opinions on copyright infringment aside (I do own a copy of this game...somewhere), why would this still be checked actively?

Because Capcom hires another company or has a legal department that looks for any torrent about any of their IPs and sends out threats to people like you. Most every company does this these days.

Change to a torrent program that supports blacklist plugins, or change to uTorrent and set it to encrypted (and use a blacklist)

You were probably downloading from someone in Capcom or as mentioned above, a 3rd party seeding the files with the intent of catching people downloading them.

that's how I got caught for downloading sopranos. They upload the files and get people who download them. kind of stupid really, and inefficient.

well actually, I've been caught twice, and have downloaded tons of stuff before and after that. It's like getting a speeding ticket. They don't get everyone, and the ones they do get still do it.

Did you have to pay out money or was it just a slap on the wrist type of thing?

I was on a university, so only got wrist slaps. I have never been sued or anything. Another time I got pinched was for downloading a movie that I already owned. I didn't feel like lugging my DVD collection to my school, but they tried to tell me that universal studios doesn't care if I already own a copy of a movie, and that downloading it was still illegal.

    whatever.

I have never gotton any messages like that before. Of course I dont use my ISP email(nor do I know it). So if I ever got an email like this i'd never know.

I rarely do this(download games)...usually only when I get a rare game I dont wana harm the real disc of.

It's called fair use. Shove the law in their face next time

I totally understand what you mean, as I downloaded torrents of games that I own just because I didn't feel like driving 40+ minutes to get my original.

If you don't mind my asking, what university are you at in NC?

How about you people just stop breaking the damn law? I vote to lock this thread. The entire discussion here has turned into a bunch of "I didn't get caught or the punishment was nothing" bragging.

I'm sorry, but my country tolerates downloading for personal usage. Just because your nation doesn't tolerate this civil offence, doesn't mean the rest of us don't. I simply started this thread to ask why Capcom still cared about a game that was released more than 8+ years ago.

Could it be that it was the MPAA thinking it was Resident Evil 2 the movie?

I fail to see how it is illegal to have a copy of something that you actually own and have paid for.. I used to either rip my own or download copies of PSP games that I already owned because they load faster off of memory than off of UMD.. not to mmention the battery savings.

Like GOH has stated. It is called Fair Use and there is no issue as long as you can produce the original as proof of ownership.

Forgive me for ranting, but I am simply getting sick and tired of seeing the increasing number of threads related to casual piracy popping up here. My comments were not directed specifically to anyone, but the general attitude in this thread. Admittedly, there are plenty of places where this kind of thing is tolerated, but I would point out that just because something is tolerated, it does not mean that it is legal or right to do. I understand that you own the game and lost it, but to complain about being caught downloading it gave me the impression that you thought companies shouldn't care about people pirating older games.

Actually copying something for Fair Use has been pretty much prevented by the DMCA for many years now, even if it is relatively easy to do.

As we all know, the DMCA is a rather overly broad law that is broken, and actually a couple of fair minded senators are working on a bill that would protect fair use (under certain circumstances, of course) from being destroyed by the broken farce that is the DMCA.
