I heard about a Rent-a-Wreck renting chain from a friend, and had a look for it in the net. Apparently they are freaking cheap (like $25 for a middle / full size car for one day). Any impressions/suggestions/comments about it?

I have heard of them but have never used them. From what I understand the cars are older than most place (4-5yrs vs 1yr for others) and it is a crapshoot on what each franchise has for stock since I believe there are no set standards. Another thing is that their locations are very sporadic unlike other rentals. On the plus side I've heard they are more likely to rent to younger drivers.

Honestly though many car rental places have cars in that price range. I did a quick check and Budget, Avis, and Hertz all have mid-size cars in that price range.

I don't know if it matters to you but some things to know about renting is that most places usually won't rent to anyone under 21. The exceptions are New York and Michigan which are required by law to rent to younger people. If they do rent the price might be higher. Also a credit card is required at most places but some will make exceptions. Finally if your from another country I'm pretty sure they won't rent unless you have an international driver's license. Hope this helps.

    Hell that helped alot ^^.
Im 28, so no problem on that side. As for the international driving licence, I have it still to set up but I'll get it done in the next weeks, so that shouldnt be a problem either!

    Thanks again!

I've dealt with Hertz on several ocassions and it's been fine.

Another company I've rented from several times is Enterprise:

Both are good - although Hertz always had much nicer cars (and almost every car I rented from Hertz was under 5,000 miles on it).

Yeah I've rented from enterprise a few times.

I even had the privelidge of wrecking one of their cars mere hours after leaving the lot... That was truely one of the worst weekends of my life.

I actually dont care about the mileage, just the price should be as low as possible - and the car work of course :p

Never used them, but they've been in business for quite some time. Maybe check if the BBB has anything about them.

I wouldn't. The last thing you want is some old junker rental dying on you in the middle of a highway.

We've used Payless a fair few times now. Decent service and fairly cheap ($45 for a day unlimited mileage from Philly). They have the usual airport/train station shuttle service for free.

We borrowed a Hyundai SUV, even though it was meant to be the uber budget line. I never ever wanted to drive a Hyundai, but they're actually pretty decent in the US, great MPG and enough power to keep things moving. I am pleasantly surprised. In the UK they are hideous though.

I used them once in Canada. Pretty cheap, I think they even had an ad in the in-flight brocure too. We got a Dodge Caravan for a few days as they were out of standard cars, which was ok: a few years old, been loved quite a bit (wear and tear), but it did fine, until we had to trade it in for the worst car ever: a Pontiac Sunfire. 2005, so it was newish, but being American, it was horrendously built. The inside panneling on the rear doors almost fell off every time I closed them and the plastics around the pillars were sharper than my razor. It worked for a few weeks until we bought our own car (Mazda MPV :p), but God, its a horrible car.

Seems like payless isnt on the route we are planning to go...

 that must have been a nice experience indeed! Anyway, thanks for your opinions! I'll need that car for about three weeks during september - oct, so i still have time to check all possibilities.
