Even 3D games benifit though from being able to expand RAM at a later date though. Since RAM is always going to cost you more when the system launches, it only makes sense to include a method of installing more later on. The Sega Saturn and N64 did this very nicely. The PS1 and PS2 both could have used some sort of RAM upgrade slot.

If they did, there would be a perfect Ketsui port and every one, including me, could quit wanking to their PCBs.

Here's a useful thread that's semi-related to the topic at hand:

Who argued that they didn't? If that was a reply to my post, the point of it was that the PSX was more capable with '2D' style games than most gave it credit for, it was the developers that failed to get to grips with the PlayStation's way of going things.

The Cart port was not originally designed for RAM carts, it was designed for ROM carts. It was just an afterthought. A lucky one, since we never really saw a use of it aside from that (excluding the few SNK ROM carts and the backup unit). What began life as some legacy mark of the bodge-job design of the Saturn ended up becoming a source of extended life, at least in Japan. Funny how these things happen.

The insane thing is that the PSX was originally going to have 1MB RAM total! What were they thinking?

The PS2 could not have had a fast enough slot for memory I don't think. It used much faster RDRAM than the N64, anyway. I don't support memory add-ons, as it forces the consumer to buy extra to play games when they have already paid for that with their system. It's a bad habit and it encourages developers to take easy options like Rare did with Perfect Dark.

I don't either, but let's face it, the games would have been better. Look at the progression from HuCard to CD, to SCD, then to ACD (okay, the last one sucks for the most part).

But you hit the nail on the head w/ PS getting dissed for not being a 2D machine. As one can see from games pointed out in this thread, it has some amazing stuff.

bad example. Rare is known to be very hard working. PD made good use of the Expansion Pak. It was DK64 that loaded entire levels into RAM instead of partially loading like Tooie.
