Hi I recently started burning and backing up games of my Dreamcast on to CD-R's. After each one was burned I personally went to my "DC" system and booted up the games to make sure that they would run correctly before putting them away. Two Days later I go to start some games such as "Sonic Adventure" and "Shenmue". "Sonic Adventure" would not start but after some trial and error it eventually booted up, (the same disc as two days earlier) I was relieved but was slightly confused on to why this would be happening. Next came "Shenmue". no matter what I did I could not get this game to start up, It would display a disc not found error or would boot up directly to the music screen and play tracks from the game, ( the same disc from 2 days earlier which had recently worked). I loaded in the Shenmue Disc2 and 3, those worked fine. If anyone has any ideas as to why this would be and any problem solving techniques would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest tuning your POT on your laser, also quality CDR's like Taiyo Yunden and JVC AZO disc burned with a good driver (aka plextor) always gives good results. TDK, Memorex, Sony, all make crappy CDR's. I suggest only disc with AZO dye's and a HQ burner at 16x with a tuned laser will solve your problem.

JVC is actually Taiyo Yuden now.

JVC doesnt really exist anymore and the name is just licensed. Taiyo Yuden Licensed it for selling media in the west as its an established brand. Same dye, same id's etc.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I appreciate it. So most of you think the "Verbatim" discs I have used are just straight crappy? I have also been burning games at 20X so should i be lowering it to 16X to get better results as well? I am not a pro electrician or Tech by any means so what exactly does turning your POT on your laser mean and AZO dye's? Again I thank everyone for responses and the help I am receiving.

Are you scrambling the 1ST_READ.BIN? You need to do that with a tool such as this one before burning the CD, else the Dreamcast won't be able to use it.

Dreamcast binaries for retail come scrambled. That tool is for mostly homebrew disc/programs.

Azo dye, is the the dye used on the recording surface of the disc. I use these, which are superb for DC burns in my opinion.

Some say burning lower is better, yet in some cases higher is better. Personally, I burn @ 4x or 8X on my burner, which I have done since back in the early DC days when burners where at lower speeds. Another tip, stick to the same type of media, as different ones would reflect the light to laser differently than others
