is it possible like in retail console?

 

It's possible to load non selfboot backups on a devkit, by creating an image of utopia in the gd-m, putting a non selfboot backup in the tray, then loading utopia in the gd-m and switching to gd-rom mode once utopia is loaded. It should then boots the cd-r.

The gd-rom emulator on the DevKit, it allows you to mimic a gd-rom in the disc drive using a HDD.
