The new version of the PS3 Blu-Ray remote was announced nearly a year ago. Does anyone know if this has even been released in Japan as I can't seem to find anything, even though it was supposed to be out last March?
http://www.amazon.co.jp/ソニー・コンピュータエンタテインメント-PlayStation-3用-BDリモートコントローラ-CECH-ZRC1J/dp/B004LQ0B4E Yes, you can get them in Japan. Never released in the US or UK as far as I can find. Pity you can't get them in the UK, I wouldn't need an extra remote along with my universal remote.
That looks pretty cool. I have the older model and I love it, but this looks even cooler. Is it bluetooth like the older one?
This isn't as useful as it seems, considering you have to have a Sony TV and amp for the other functions. Of course it is, there's even a BT logo on the bottom.
Mine is pretty useful. I watch Netflix and Blu-rays on my PS3 all the time, and it's nice to be able to pause the movie without even having to pick up the remote and point it at the system. I wish all remotes were like that. I guess the TV and AMP functions would be pretty useless to me, unless they can be programmed to other devices.
I wasn't talking about the remote itself, which is awesome and I use it all the time, just the TV and amp functions unless you're some kind of Sony fanatic.
You shouldn't need a Sony TV, even though they advertise it as so. The slimline PS3 features HDMI-CEC so I'm able to control the PS3, Sony 5.1 Amp and Panasonic TV all with the TV remote. I can get to most of the PS3 menus using the Panasonic remote, but it does make things a little fiddly at times, and obviously there's no PS button. I thought it'd be easier to reverse the situation, and have this remote that features all the PlayStation buttons, as well as volume control for the amp and basic TV functions (power and switching AV inputs). It's also dual format Bluetooth and IR.
It is a bit of a nuisance that the original PS3 doesn't support HDMI-CEC due to some arbitrary reason - only the PS3 Slim works with HDMI-CEC.
I didn't even know about HDMI-CEC before this, which sounds like an awesome feature. Then again, I just tried it on my LG TV and it just won't work with the PS3.
HDMI-CEC is a standard so it should work. Sony call it Bravia Link and on LG sets it should be called SimpLink. See if you can find anything in your telly settings relating to it. I sort of came across it by accident myself when I was setting up the slimline and fiddling with the TV settings. You also have to activate it in the PS3's settings. There's a 'Control for HDMI' option that needs to be on. Turning the telly on with its remote also turns the amp on. I then have to press the AV button to select HDMI 1, and that switches the PS3 on.
