Is there any reason why this is happening? it happens with any(by that I meant variations from different installations on different rigs) config file I use.

And it's not just this one machine, my Pc in the other room has the same problem...

    I'm puzzled.

    is it ANY .cfg file??

Try opening up notepad and make your own .cfg file and then re-open it, see it shows gibberish.

It only seems to be this one .cfg

Why would it? it hasn't been altered, it's from a fresh install of the disc it came from...

Notepad commonly doesn't understand line breaks and certain character sets.

Try opening it in another editor, such as Wordpad, or the excellent Notepad++ ( http://notepad-plus-plus.org )

It might help if you told us what application created that .cfg file. It may well be perfectly correct, there's no rule that says config files have to be written in legible English.

This. Just because a file ends in .cfg doesn't mean it's meant to be user editable - I'm pretty sure this one isn't. That being said, if you absolutely insist on fiddling around with the file, Notepad's not the right tool - get yourself a hex editor instead.

I've opened in Wordpad and Note pad

    and just so everyone knows.

    It's DMC4's .cfg file.

I had it installed on another machine and tried to edit it and it was like that. And so I installed it on this one to see if it would do the same thing and it did. Which was odd because it's never been like that in the past when i've had the game installed.

It needed to be edited to turn off the SLI option, which is on by default and causes the game to lockup and crash during cutscenes.

I could write gibberish in a CFG file if I wanted. I could put an MP3 in a cfg file. The extension doesn't mean anything about whether you should be able to edit it or not.

If you want to edit it though, get a hex editor like XVI32 and go to town. Don't be surprised if it has no effect though.

    That's not the problem.

    It used to be editable!

I used it to turn off the SLI Option the first time I played it on both machines.

And this came from a clean install

Ahhh .cfg files, this takes me back.

I'll PM you my email address. Send the .cfg file to me I'll see what I can do with it for you. Looks like a formatting issue to me.

Post #62 on >this page< says the settings are in a different file, config.ini which is plain text.

Yeah, the Config.Ini also works. But I should be able to do it with the Config file. Which is what I used before. I just don't see why it suddenly was like this
