I've just ordered a 160 Gig hard drive to replace the 40 Gig one in my PC at the moment. What I want to do is copy the entire 40 Gig to the 160 gig HD then take out the 40 Gig and install it in to an external drive case and use it as a type of spare back up disc that wouldn't be switched on most of the time. The question I have is that if I do copy the 40gig to the 160gig then replace the 40 with the 160, will I get any program running errors from programs stored on that disc such as Adobe Photoshop? I know that normal files will be fine but I'm not too sure about the program files. Any help on the matter would be great ! Yakumo
No you won't. You will need a program called Norton Ghost. You can't simply copy it while running windows. You will need Ghost in order to clone the HDD over to the new one. When you get it and follow the instructions and successfully clone it. Boot up the system and wait for Windows to ask you to restart the system. then it will all run peachy.
THanks madhatter256 ! I'll give that a try. The HD probably won't come till Wednesday or Thursday so I've got a few days to find Norton Ghost. Yakumo
You can usually find OEM versions of Norton Systemworks (it use to include Ghost, but check to make sure) for next to nothing.
Alternatively, boot off a linux live CD, and copy all the data over using that, and as a bonus, its free!
Wow Steadster I guess I learn something new everyday. I hadn't realized that linux could make it so damned easy.
got myself a copy of Norton Ghost today. All I have to do now is wait for my 160gig HD to arrive Thanks for all the help guys !
