Paranoid parents ok MY Paranoid mom wants to install a filter on 2 comptuers a laptop my Autistic brother uses and the family computer. I told them to get Net Nanny It;s the most effective and non evasive filter you can get...but it blocked my mom from using Ebay. BUT now she insists on a filter that won't effect her browsing. Problem is...OPEN DNS could ruin the internet for the whole house. On a Router I own even. I want her to have her mind at ease but I also don't want to have just about every website I vist blocked either. In the event they DO go in my router and change the ISP's DNS address to whatever the DNS of Open DNS is how do I override it? Do I just reset the router and run the configuration program and then set the password to what it was or what? It's a Pretty Standard Linksys router. I want mom to have peace of mind but...I'm a single male in my 20s with no girlfriend...I need my outlets... Edit- I got my ISP's DNS numbers as they are right now before anything was changed. I just need to know what and where to input these if this filter fucks the whole internet.
First whats wrong with OpenDNS? I use them (much faster then comcasts lame-o dns). 2) just manually set the dns on whatever machine(s) are going to be using OpenDNS and leave the router alone. Its not hard: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305553
Ok, I'll stop them from configuring the router before they ruin everything. The problem with Open DNS isn't the service but the fact they want to use this as a filter for every computer that uses wifi. WHICH since I own the router is not something I want or will allow them to do. Leave my router alone. Like I said they Want to configure the router and not the individual computers. OK mission accomplished...Caveat is I have to configure the computers my self. Fine by me.
Tell her: a) Don't bother with filters because they simply do not work. b) Pay attention to the user(s) she wants to have filtered instead of leaving it up to software.
I love how you keep claiming its your router and you dont want anyone playing with it. Im taking shes the one paying the bills so if i were her i would just stop you from using her connection.
Mom is thick. Namely she wants to know where my brother is going. I told them if not a filter at least use logging software or something.
You can set the router to use a certain DNS, then in Windows set your machine to use DHCP but manually configure the DNS server. Easy peasy. Then you won't be affected by the change on the router. To configure, right click your network connection, select Properties, select TCP/IP (might be IP Addressing 4 in Vista or 7) and click the properties button. Then select 'Use the following DNS server address:' and enter the ISP one instead of OpenDNS, or whatever you intend to use.
