    Hi Everyone,

As you may already know we now have a chat box for people to communicate with. I like the idea, however I kind of feel that it should have it's own page, or at the very least go on the front page and not on the forums. I understand that you can make the chat full screen by going to a specially crafted URL such as this:

    http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/misc.php?do=cchatbox

But its hard to remember and I wish there was a tab called "Chat" which users could just jump to instead. Having a tiny chat at the root of the forums just rubs me the wrong way, especially if your reading it from a mobile device or something that runs slow, or not at all for complex web controls. I mean, it's not large enough to really enjoy, and it's not small enough to get out of the way. I can appreciate if not everyone agrees with this, but I thought I'd put it out there for consideration in any case. :)

I think this would be a good idea.

Also, is it just me, or does the chat box feel upside down? I've always felt like the new text appears at the bottom of a chat. That way you scroll up for older posts and read down to the current posts. This one you scroll down and read up. And I catch myself reading all of these conversations backwards... I don't know, it's probably just me.

I guess preferences come from what programs you were used to running that had chat. Facebook has the chat with text at the bottom, and I'm sure many of us here are used to that.

I bet if Facebook had chat with new text at the top we'd be OK with the current chat system. I'm not saying it's bad, it just would be cool to have it optimized

Yeah, I guess. I don't use Facebook chat but I'm thinking like... Aim, MSN, Skype, Facebook, phone text messages, Chat Roulette (lol) other sites have chat like USTREAM. I've never seen a chat with new posts at the top. Maybe I'm just dumb, and don't know what I'm talking about. haha

I've gotten use to chat the way it worked back in the BBS days. That is, text appeared at the bottom of your terminal instead of on top. Inserting new lines at the top of the stack (or bottom depending on how you look at it) seems like a mistake to me.

I have to admit, we are abusing the box as it's designed to be a comment/shout box so I'm not sure if I can fault the default design of it. But because it's directly on the forums, it's too irresistible not to use it for chatting with your friends. I have a feeling if it was moved to the front page, it would be used a lot more for comments/shouting than actual chatting. But there isn't anything wrong with chatting by any means. Just give it a dedicated page or something.
