    Hello,

I don't know if this has been discussed before (I haven't found a thread about it) but is it possible to increase a bit the size (number of last messages shown) of the Chatbox. Indeed, we sometimes miss the beginning of an interesting talk as there is not enought message shown in the Chatbox. Moreover, the chatbox archive has been deleted, so it is now impossible to follow some interesting talks.

    Hope I am understandable haha

    Thanks !

Could you not just ask what you have missed?

Well, asking what I have missed will just break the conversation, and get things harder to understand for other people.

If this chatbox modification can be easily done, then it will be cool. if not, I will follow your advice.

Assuming it is a simple change, how far back would you want the log to go? two hours, or maybe 200 lines? (It's not like there's a (good) way for the chat system to find the "boundaries" of a conversation.) And then what if the conversation you're interested in started, say, 130 minutes or 210 lines ago? Start a new request to extend the log even further?
Remember there's always going to be a cutoff at some point (unless the archive is reinstated, but I'd think it was eliminated for a reason).

The shoutbox used to be longer, but the amount of bandwidth usage was costing too much so assembler made it smaller to cost less.

Am I right to feel a bit attacked by your answer ? Hope I am wrong. No need to drop a such speech. I was just wondering if the box could be 10 lines longer, no more. There is no need to read the full conversarion to understand the main subject. Just few lines is enought. But when there is maybe 3 or 4 people involved in a convo, hints (ints ?) about the main subject can be missed fast.

This is a totally understandable reason and my thread don't need to be kept after a such answer. Thanks ! :)

So I guess an admin can close this thread !

I may have misunderstood you, I though you wanted the amount of old lines that show up when the box loads to be increased so you could jump right into an ongoing discussion. Yeah, I too have lost track of a conversation or two that scrolled through too fast because I was away for a couple of minutes - but the current length seems perfectly sufficient 99.9% of the time. One just has to pay attention.

If the chat really eats up that much bandwidth, I wonder if making it opt-in to show up only for those users actually interested in using it instead of for everyone wouldn't have been a better solution? meh...

You are right, not all conversations are going too fast. It mostly depends on the time of the day.

Adding a such option will be too much work, I guess. So better forgot this thread and keep an eye on interesting talks :)

As it currently stands, it only loads up if you are logged in and it only loads on the first page, so most of the time, it's not loaded for everyone on the site. Most people don't/wouldn't hang around on the homepage long enough for it to matter in the grand scheme of things, but, I do actually agree with the opt-in option for those who are logged in.

It can be removed from the index pretty easy and changing the amount of messages is just changing a couple of numbers.

Being totally honest Taigachat's development has been dead for ages the only decent one that I trust is Siropu chat. There's one made by a vBulletin coder but their stuff get's hacked alot which is something I'm 99.9% sure Assembler would like to avoid happening here. (Which is good. :p)

As for Siropu chat, It's updated pretty fast/ is stable. Only drawback is there's a yearly fee attached to get updates.

I think the bandwidth issue was mainly because everyone, including visitors, was seeing the chatbox.

Now that it's only visible for logged in members, it might be worth trying to increase the lines to like 50 or something and see if it's still an issue.

Major issue with Taigachat is it constantly refreshes even if you're not using the chatbox. Ajax can cause load quite bad more so seeing as there's around 100+ online at once. Even if idle it still refreshes.

Will have to do some tests though as it's been forever since I've used taigachat on my sites. Still got 3 licenses to it and 2 Siropu lol.
