Cheaper PS3 dev kits

According to this Develop article, Sony have cut the price of the PS3 dev kits to $2000/€1700.

However, in the article they keep referring to this new DECR-1400X model as a Reference Tool. Surely they mean a TEST unit for that price? I thought that the full on PS3 RT was around $10k, and the TEST units were originally around half that. I'm also sure I remember reading that Sony had increased the capabilities of the TEST units to make them more developer friendly.

Yeah, I just read that on Engadget too. So what are we saying then? This new DECR-1400X model is a 40GB TEST unit with capabilities similar to a RT?

no these are not "TEST" kits, debugging stations only costed $800 new, and the price on those might have dropped since then.

i guess i'll just settle on painting "TEST" on my own ps3
