Just wanting some quick advice - I'm hoping to ship a Genesis (console only) from the States to the UK. The USPS quote is $40 which is insane given the worth of the unit. I don't care how long it takes to get here, just wondering what the best option is and if any members have tips or advice.

    Cheers all.

I got my Set 4 via surface mail - it took several months to arrive (hence I plugged it in eagerly and blew it up before setting PSU to 240v) but it was cheap, probbaly cheaper than the cost of me resending it to europe. I'm assuming the $40 quote is for airmail? If you have time have it packed well and sent via surface mail, or is there a rush?

US shipping costs have gone up almost 100%.

It's about $53 for 4-5 pound priority mail international.

If it's shipped as fist class mail, it would be appx 38-40.

Shipping from the US sucks, it's why I don't bother selling large items
international anymore unless the item is so valuable I can split the shipping
    and still make money.

USPS has been the most economic way to send every international package I've ever sent. FedEx and UPS have been higher every time that I've checked so I have actually stopped using them.

http://ircalc.usps.gov/ The prices are spot on with what they will charge you if you know the correct weight/dimensions of your package.

I usually create my international labels with USPS Shipping Assistant software, It's nice to print it out instead of writing on the box, plus it will tell you how much postage will be and what customs forms you need.

    That's insane.

Sending it via Airmail to the US from here would cost no more than £10.

Like ^ said. Maybe check out a courier service, DHL, UPS, Fedex etc. I know they do some pretty good deals here.

I've tried those others, DHL and UPS both want ~$120 or more. Can't get Fedex's international shipping calculator to work right now (won't offer me any destinations), and it doesn't sound like there's any real chance they'd be much cheaper

Apparently USPS stopped offering surface (sea) mail in 2007. It's been longer than that since I even considered it, but given the lack of options I'd look into it again. DHL only seem to offer it for very big shipments. Finding out about US surface mail services is actually kind of tricky on Google because they geoIP me to the UK and I just get a bunch of Royal Mail websites as results.

So what happened that made shipping from the US so expensive?

Hi all, I hope you don't me dropping in here with my question.

I have a similar situation, I need an item to be shipped from the US to me (Germany).
However, I want it be as SAVE and QUICK as possible - given the value of the item the shipping costs are secondary, it just needs to be save (=handled carefully, not damaged in transit) and faaaaast (as I am such an impatient person ;)).

What would be my best option for that? And what would be aproximate costs?

Check the first hyperlink in my post my friend. USPS is safe if the shipper packs the item carefully and insurance is also a good thing :D I recently shipped a 17 pound package to Germany and I don't remember the cost being very prohibitive, I'll try and dig up my receipt for you later to see what it exactly cost but go to the hyperlink I posted and act as If your making the shipment to yourself and you can see the different options and their cost.

If you have trouble navigating it just pm me the weight and dimensions and i'll send you the different options with their cost.

    **edit again**

Looks like it cost me $74 USD to ship 17 lbs. to Germany with $500 of insurance (iirc $500 was the highest insured value that german customs would accept) So person shipping may only be able to purchase $500 of insurance for you even if the item is worth more :/

USPS is usually the cheapest. Plus it helps support all of us postal workers.

As long as it's over a certain weight/size, you'll find www.ipsparcel.com are WAY cheaper than USPS. Under a certain size, noone's cheaper than USPS. Don't USPS offer surface mail, though?

You could try the import services from places over here (www.interparcel.com, www.postagesupermarket.com, www.parcel2go.com etc.) but importing through a carrier is usually very dear.

    *EDIT*

20"x20"x10" parcel, 5lbs, shipped from 90210 to London. Insured for $100.

    IPSParcel: $108.50 10-15 days, $129.83 3-5 days, $136.66 2-3 days
USPS Global Express Guaranteed: $209.97 online, $233.30 Post Office, 1-3 days

Hm, my item would be 19" rack size, 2HUs and weight.... not sure, I guess a lot xD (about 2x a PS3 I'd guestimate).

But from what I read so far here, USPS sounds like a good option, will suggest that :)
Afterall, the source of shipment lives in the US, so he should know well what to use already, still can't hurt to grab some info :)

    Thanks guys :)
