I have a v7 console with a 400C laser in it which has died on the DVD side of things as the previous user liked to read scratched discs with it :\

I'm curious to know if I should look around for a 400C or perhaps try to find the rarer HD7 laser?

I have enough parts to fully replace the drive/laser chassis if needed to fit any type of laser, but I'm just curious if there were any major advantages over the different types. I don't want to go for a 400B as those burn out the coils (and I used to repair these quite a bit back in 2004).

Also are there any limitations on what lensChanger can do? (the ELF that just flashes the firmware for the laser type).

Lenschanger isn't very good to do this as it just contains a database of eeprom settings (3 or 4 variations for each PS2 model it knows of) and on some rare cases it cause more problems than helps. Just find a laser of the proper type (in your case 400C) and replace.

    Will save you some headache.

If you still insist on using lenschanger make sure you backup the eeprom before flashing changed settings.

You can also pull the diode off of it and replace the diode...It should be 3 pins and costs about $6-10 for a brand new diode.
