I've just got my hands on a disgustingly filthy PS2: So I think I'm gonna try and take it apart completely to wash all the plastic and clear all the crap that I can. In terms of gunk that's on the memory card input and controller ports etc, should I use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol?
Take out the screws and do a full bath is hot water with cleaning agents. For the delicate parts and ports, rubbing alcohol is the best way to go. Looks like the previous owner was a heavy smoker- so that gunk will be sticky You didn't pay for that, did you?
Thanks man. Yeah I did... although I was more interested in the network adaptors that came with it lol. The console was just a spare.
Hose it down, and soak in warm soapy water with some metho. Then hose it down, let it air dry. I did that to my custom XBOX, that was caked in dust, crumbs, grass etc.
Well I've given the case a good wash and cleaned some of the crap from around the edges. Have ordered some compressed air so when that comes I'll give the hard to reach areas a bit of a clean. But now the bloody thing won't read discs! Can hear the laser click 3 times, disc spins, laser light comes on/stays on but doesn't load.
ps2's are very temperamental and finicky about the drive assembly / mech being right, if you've had it apart try screwing with that a bit make sure its going through its full range of motion etc. also check if it reads ps1 games and different types of ps2 discs might be the laser on its way out.
Very good choice, as a PS2 loading it's games from the hard drive is *fantastic*. You sound like you know what you're doing, but if not, have a look in the thread at; http://www.assemblergames.com/forum...for-PS2&highlight=ps2+network+card+hard+drive for details of what's involved.
I saw a tutorial on youtube on how to clean the laser and thought it looked simple enough. Except that the one I have is put together slightly differently than the tutorial... so I tried to be clever and get under the laser mechanism another way. Now I've accidentally pulled out the ribbon cable going to the motor that drives the laser forward/backwards. I think I've shot myself in the foot here but may as well ask, how difficult is it to put those ribbon cables back where they're supposed to go? Assuming I can even find where it goes.
Thanks man, if you look at the bottom of that thread I thanked you cos I got my PS2 up and running with Free McBoot based on your post, and have recently got the HD running as well
Well it took me all night but I managed to clean the laser and somehow fiddle it all back together so the console is reading discs again. That's a learning experience I won't forget in a hurry...
