There's not much you can do other than blow off any dust, and wipe the lens with lens cleaner.

Be careful when turning the console upside down with the cover off, as the drive assembly can fall away. For the case, just use washing up liquid, warm water and a sponge to clean it. You can use an old toothbrush to get any dirt out of the vents etc.

well, the drive came off,but ive reassembled it,still works

the main reason im cleaning it up is that some dumb kids used fraking tape to hold the power adapter in place

it is all sticky now,so is it a good idea to take the motherboard out to clean the vents underneat?

Maybe some rubbing alcohol for the gross/stickyness, some glass cleaners can work well also.

And yea I'd say it's a good idea if you already have it apart to do a detailed job and clean everything.... I have found throwing housings in the dish washer works wonders... just don't run it through the dry cycle!!

Windex, napkins, and Q-tips for cleaning up the vents and nooks and crannys around the plastic case areas.

If you already have it apart, try cleaning the case in the sink with warm soapy water...and scrub it with a nylon brush. I'd get the adhesive off with alcohol first though, also when using alcohol, be careful around any logos, alcohol will remove them in some instances.

This gets all the gunk out of the vents etc, and works much better than just wiping it off with windex or alcohol.
I've found this the easiest way to go about it, the only drawback is getting the shell dry again, I shake as much water off as possible, then use a clean hand towel.

Also, consoles that have lids, etc, make sure you remove any metal parts, springs etc, not a good idea to get those wet.

I've found that a pencil eraser helps to shift residue left by adhesive tape. Keep rubbing away at it maybe with a drop or two of window cleaner and it should start to shift.

Use googone to remove adhesive residue. It works wonders and it's safe on that plastic.

The only problem I've had recently in working with psones is that the feet keep degrading over time.. any suggestions on replacements?

I have an old bike inner tube that I cut rubber feet out of all the time. Then double-sided tape or medium-strength glue to keep them on.

There's probably a way to buy adhesive-sided rubber (to cut new feet out of), but probably not in small ammounts.

Never used goof off, so I can't say. My only gripe is that goo gone has that citrus smell and it takes forever for it to go away.

I'd wager that a nice soak in bleach would help the smell... (I do this to most of the plastic parts of my systems when I'm doing a restoration/rebuild.

and yes, psx controllers (especially analog and later) get disgusting inside... I make it a point to soak all controllers I get (after disassembly of course) in bleach overnight before even tackling the residual dust/grime issues- it helps loosen it up and also help one feel that what they're working on is a tad more sterile :D

I suppose as a matter of course, I keep mass quantities of bleach and 90+ % alchohol (for cleaning lcd, pcb, processors, connectors) around for vintage computer and gaming restoration both...
