I ran into a real bad clock cap leak today. I removed the clock cap and noticed that the 1AM surface mount transistor right above the clock cap Q7G1 was missing and the other 3 resistors R7G1, R7G2 and R7G3 were corroded bad but were still attached.

What do these components do and should I worry about replacing the transistor? Also what is the best thing to use to clean off the acid from the cap off the board? I have ran the motherboard for a few days and the motherboard works fine. It is a version 1.1

Rubbing alcohol works good, and lemon juice (not a whole lot though)

I just used alcohol and yeah people say lemon juice or vinegar but like Hex said not a whole lot or your Xbox may smell like fish and chips.

Also if it starts to stay on, in other words won't turn off, then the long traces at the front of the mother board may have been affected, I had two I had to bridge but it's a fairly easy fix.

The motherboard is working fine. Were those components for the charging the clock cap or something else with the clock cap?

Replace them if you're concerned. If you're wondering if you can run the XBox without them you probably can't.

I remove the clock cap and never replace it I just use it like that. Now the resistors and the transistor is another thing.

From what I can tell the clock cap isn't needed on hard modded systems. Not sure about the retail BIOS. My 1.4 board still powers on even when I unplug it and I know for fact the clock cap is dead since it can be unplugged for only 5 seconds and I have to reset the date and time when I power it up next. The transistor and resistor thing is another thing. Hard to say what they do without pictures.

i just removed the transistor from a dead motherboard. I lost 1 in the process. But anyway I was able to clean it all up and it looks way better than I thought it would. Lucky the pads were not lifted. I guess the solder that was on the pad protected it.

Not sure about hard mods but I'm pretty sure the 1.6 v xbox wont boot without the cap to stock softmod etc.. needs to be replaced I use a small amount of vinegar and a soft toothbrush when I remove these caps , seems to work well.
