A friend of my suggested that collecting old Gameboys might be a good investment.

My goal in life right now is to put together a traveling gaming museium of sorts
My collection as it is now isn't exzbitable playable to the general public maybe but not something I'd charge $20 for people to get in for. But I Digress

What are some of the rarer gameboys and other MISC handhelds?

i have one of the limited edtion black gameboys, you dont see them too often, and im not sure if they were released state-side,

personal preference for me with old handhelds is the atari lynx, sorely under-rated!

Lynx I or Lynx II Diddydonn? My only gripe was the limited battery life. The second edition is better and has a clearer screen, but I loved the design of the first version.

I don't think any of the original GameBoy's are considered rare or expensive. I have black, pink, yellow and about seven original ones and haven't paid more than £5 for any of them. There are a few nice special edition GBA's/SP's that do fetch a nice price, my particular favourite is the Pokemon GBC. It looks lovely next to my Pikachu N64;-)

The Game Boy Light, perhaps? Although I've seen some on eBay before and they weren't too pricey..

    SEGA Nomad?

Rather than just trying to find the rarest ones, I think a better endeavor would be trying to track down every official edition of every Gameboy ever made. Now THAT would be one impressive collection and something to really show off.

Check out this site. It's not a complete list, but it's a good start.

I never really saw many in black, but I work for Gamestation and we had a couple of weeks once where about 4 or 5 were traded in, which makes me think perhaps they're not too rare, that said, never seen any before or since.

I've also noticed Wonderswans aren't so common anymore.

Mr Driller is the shit on Wonderswan. (and as a guilty gear fan it has 2 GG games)

There's a limited edition Game Boy Light (as if the regular Lights weren't rare enough...) that was limited to 5,000 units and put out by Famitsu Magazine for their 500th Issue Celebration. It was a clear unit called "Skeleton Game Boy Light"
Here are some images I grabbed from an auction a while back ($400 I think it was)

Has anybody seen the UK football special edition gameboys around recently? I remeber seeing a manchester united one as a kid. I bet they're hard to come by.

Looks like it might have been batteries.

I have a silver game boy light that I bought in Singapore when I was backpacking for months in about 1998. I had no idea they were rare, so I've taken mine camping, hiking, all over the place. I just chuck it in my bag and go, so it's a bit beat up now.

Wish I'd known that they'd become actually worth something one day.. (but I guess I would have missed out on hours and hours playing Choplifter...!)

I sold one of these (something around number 500), unopened, one year ago for 150 Euro on ebay (btw, yes it came with two batteries in the package, nothing special). It was way cheaper in Japan where I had bought it. Also, the normal game boy lights are not expensive at all if you don't care about condition (around 5-10$). To find game boys (especially the pre-Advance ones) complete and in perfect condition is, of course, a completely different story.
