So I recently [Few months ago] bought a Commodore 64 system, monitor, and disk drive. I know some BASIC, but I'm not sure what I can all do with it yet. I wanted it for some games, since I'm a retro obsesser [sp?]. Sorry if it's in the wrong forum, couldn't really find "Commodore 64" to fit in anywhere. Websites would be nice also, about the Commodore 64.
Well, it is far from rare ;-) "General gaming" would be better - or you could even put it under the computer section at the bottom. The C64 came with some great manuals. Do you not have these? You'll find them online, e.g.: http://project64.c64.org/index.htm Specifically: User's Guide Programmer's Guide What can you do with it?? Well, it's a home computer - what CAN'T you do with it?! hehe. You can program it. You can buy software for it (thousands of games and applications). You should have a tape drive, not just a disk drive. You can get hardware add-ons for it (MIDI interfaces, light pens, robot arms, drum machines... all sorts!). You might want to look for some old Commodore 64 magazines, e.g. Zzap! http://www.zzap64.co.uk/
I've heard that the MMC64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMC64) is a useful item for managing disk/game files, and for saving you from doing tons of floppy transfers...
If your main interest is games, then your first step would be getting games onto actual disks so you can play them. Unfortunately, PC drives can't handle the GCR formatting that the C64 uses, so you have to hook the 1541 disk drive up to a PC using an X1541 cable. Keep in mind that you'll need some amount of double density 5.25" disks for this... don't use high density. If you have the money for it, I'd highly recommend the 1541 Ultimate. It's essentially an SD card adaptor so you can play disk and tape images off flash cards. It can also do many other tricks, like operate as a RAM expansion, and act as a variety of freezer cartridges if you're interested in poking around in the code. As I said, it's a pricey piece of kit, but I have one myself, and it works very well. --Zero
