They're looking for funding to complete the game, so for $10 you can get the game when it's released (and help ensure that will happen - if not, they won't take your money)

The way kickstarter works is that if they don't get enough money to reach their goal, then they won't take anyone's money (all or nothing). There's only about a week left and they're quite a while away from their goal, but the pledging seems to be picking up steam. They've gained about $10,000 in pledges over the last few days, so hopefully they'll make it.

They have all sorts of rewards for varying levels of pledges so it sort of works out like a pre-order system. They have merchandise, physical copies of the game, soundtrack (Machinae Supremacy and Chris Huelsbeck), and even your name in the credits as a sponsor if you want to fork out $250, and even more insanely exclusive stuff for more. I found a list of all their reward levels posted here: http://www.project-giana.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=46

This does look good, and it's great that Chris Huelsbeck is still making game music. I donated and hope they'll make their goal.

The Ouya has to become real first...

Yeah, the soundtrack should be really good too. It's going to be 50% Machinae Supremacy, 50% Huelsbeck. I hope C64's level 4,8,.. music (the boss stages: spiders, dragons etc) appears in some remixed form in this game.

Can't wait for the playable demo - it should be out in a day and will definitely help boost pledges.

I am really NOT impressed, cause what I miss by a remake. Is an exact, replica of the old C64 game. This is more like a tribute/homage with great music. And there has been NONE of such versions of the C64 original, unless I am thinking of a Windows version, that I vaguely remember from some mention, in a Danish PC Player magazine from back in the day. But hey I wish them luck. But sorry I am not impressed at all. Even though the game looks shiny and stuff, and the music is great.

They already made a remake of the original on the DS a few years ago. Anyway, the demo for this game is out now, gonna check it out.

Bollocks, it is NOT a remake. It is a tribute/homage . since the word remake. Has been misused, both in the game on the kickstart page, and the DS game.

I played this on iOS last summer and felt it was pretty underwhelming.
It missed that special something that makes the Super Mario games so good.

How did you play it last year? It's not out yet. Or are you referring to the remake?

This is NOT the same game, despite the OP calling it a remake. Here's the trailer:

Yeah, he didn't play it last year. But 2 level playable demo is out now http://project-giana.com/download/

"Remake" was a poor choice of words, I removed it from the OP title. Neither this version nor the DS are "remakes" - they are completely new games.
The up-coming release looks a LOT better than the DS release (which I found was very nice looking and played well but was just too easy). I've been assured that a "hard mode" will be included in the new game ;)

An exact replica of the C64 game (just with new graphics, music and sounds) wouldn't be the sort of thing that a commercial game developer would bother doing (at least, they definitely wouldn't get much help funding it). That sort of thing is best left to a couple of devoted fans who feel like writing a remake of the game in their spare time.

They're making a modern game supporting many systems and even still, they weren't able to find a producer who was willing to support a sequel to Giana Sisters, which isn't really surprising. Trying to convince a publisher to throw their money at a sequel to "a game from 1987 that Nintendo took to court for being a ripoff of Mario Brothers (but it was really good!)" wouldn't be the easiest thing to do. The developer's themselves really wanted to make this game, and they've reached out via kickstart to make it happen through preorders etc in the form of pledges. The alternative is for the developers to go on to other projects in the mean time to earn some money and abandon Project Giana until they're financially able to keep working on it full time - which would be a shame since they're so close to finished.

That is another story. But what irks me, is the milking of a name. That sends pretty awesome chills, down my spine. Yes I did NOT play the original game, back in 1987 (I was NOT near a C64 back then), but I happened to play the game in the early 90ś . And I fell in love with the music. So I have been hunting over the years for a good remake of the game, and the games I have found. That were inspired by The Great Gianna Sisters, has been lacking, either the original levels, or the power ups. So I know, it is almost an impossibility, but why on earth had NO one really gotten their fingers out of their arse, and programmed a fan remake of the original game. With its levels, and its power ups ? I really have no clue. So people can call me in this sense a purist, but hey I just call myself a fan of the original C64 game. Since Wings Of Fury, got a real cool (free) remake some years ago. And it had all, what the original had, and more. So what the fuck has happened ? Has everybody gotten scared of the big N ? Cause there has been TONS of remakes of the theme, and what not: When it comes to the music from The Great Giana Sisters.

Game has to be above all else; fun and challenging.
I had a blast with the demo at least.

I don't think this is a remake; it's a more modern platformer utilizing a little bit of the Giana IP, if you will.

It looks a little like Soul Reaver meets Trine so it could be interesting.

I'm not sure why they need kickstarter funding for what looks like a playable game though? Seems like its almost finished and a kickstarter (more like finisher?) paycheque would be nice because not many people would buy it without that kind of publicity otherwise.

Other than that if it did pop up in a Steam sale I'd probably buy it.

Besides mentioning Chris Huelsbeck's involvement, did I forget to also mention that this is being made by Black Forest Games. And that they are the staff formerly known as Spellbound, which was the company started by Armin Gessert (one of the original creators of C64 Giana Sisters)? ;) ..check out the playable demo, the second level that they give you is especially fun.

Good to hear that the second level is fun. But what irks me is still what I mentioned above no matter whether Chris Hülsbeck and Armin Gessert is a part of the project. But I think it is awesome that Chris Hülsbeck is a part of the project. When it comes to the music. And I am at the moment rocking to his theme from the Amiga version of Turrican II.

You can see 24 of them in the Project Giana video at 0:48 in the video I posted above.

Personally, though, I see this less a 'KickStarter' and more a 'presale of the game so they can afford to finish it'.
